Baldwin in the superior court at Litchfield yesterday. The couple were married on March 19, 1923, and he had left her on May 1926, according to information given in court. The custody of their minor son was given to the mother and the father was orders (sic) to pay $7 a week for support of the child who he will be permitted to see once a week. Mr (sic) Bartlett through his attorneys filed the first suit on the grounds of desertion, but she filed a counter suit through Hubbard and Cramer. Wall and Wall represented Mr. Bartlett. A veteran of World Wars I and II, he was married at least four times and fathered Robert Raymond Barnett. In 1900, Volney was living with his parents in Boonton, New Jersey. In 1910, he may have been recorded as Balney Bartlett, living with “Walter” and “Lizzie” Bartlett in Brooklyn, New York, where his father died in 1915. The next chapter is his life comes courtesy of a questionnaire that he completed in 1935 about his World War I service. The document indicates that, prior to enlisting, he received military training along the US-Mexico border in 1916. Next, he enlisted in the National Guard on 19 Jun 1916 at Torrington, Connecticut. Before being deployed overseas as part of Co. M, 102nd Infantry, he received training at Bridgeport, Conn., 1 Apr to 1 Jul 1917, and New Haven from 1 Jul until Sept 1917. He was promoted from Private to Corporal in July 1917. He embarked from Montreal, Canada on the H.R.M.S. Canada in September 1917, arrived in Liverpool, England in October, and went on via the S. Hampton to La Havre, France, and then to Neufchateau, Belgium, arriving there in October 1917. From October 1917 through February 1918, he received additional training in France. He was deployed to Chemen de Dames in February, and was gassed there in March. [On 5 Apr 1918, the New Britain (Connecticut) Herald reported that Volney was among the wounded during an attack that occurred March 17. ] After spending about a month in the hospital, he participated in five offensive attacks from April through November, and was promoted to sergeant in November 1917. In the questionnaire, he also claims that he was recommended for Croix de Guerre for his actions at Argonne but never received the award. He departed Brest, France on 31 Mar 1919, returning to Boston on 7 Apr 1919 and was discharged from Camp Devons in Massachusetts on 29 Apr 1919. The 1935 questionnaire asked about the impact of his overseas service on his life. Volney wrote, “You can’t put a man through such an ordeal and have him be the same. It was just a case of kill or be killed and at times seemed unreal, like a dream but one always woke up after the scrap.” When asked about the effect that service had on his state of mind, Volney opined, “Well, for one thing, my thoughts are not the same as a man who has never seen action. I live in a world of my own, at the same time I am part of the world.” In January 1920, he was living with his mother in Torrington, Connecticut. On 10 Mar 1923, he married Lillian LeCreuse (born c1902) in Torrington. Their son, Robert, was born there on 9 Feb 1925. By May 1926, Volney and Lillian separated, but they did immediately file for divorce. On 10 Dec 1931, their divorced was finalized, after each had charged they were deserted by the other. Custody of Robert was given to Lillian, and Volney was awarded visiting rights on one day each week. The 1930 census indicates that Volney once again was living with his mother in Torrington. On 30 Mar 1932, Volney married Ruth E. Brazie (1904-2001) in Millerton, New York. His 1935 questionnaire indicates that they were living together in Torrington, but by 1940, Ruth was living with her parents in Harwinton, Connecticut while Volney was living in Torrington. When they divorced is not known. In Hartford, Connecticut, on 19 Jan 1942, Volney enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a sergeant. At that time he indicated that he was single with no dependents. He was discharged on 31 Oct 1945. On 26 Mar 1946, Volney married Miss Leila Ruth Young (1902-1991) in Concord, New Hampshire. They separated in 1958 or earlier and divorced on 13 Jun 1960 in Merrimack County, New Hampshire. On 6 Jun 1964, Volney married Miss Cleo Alberta Davis (1924-2010) in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Volney died 17 Dec 1978, and Cleo submitted an application for his headstone two days later, listing Pennacook, New Hampshire as her residence. Volney and Cleo both are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, New Hampshire.
