D.D. SACKETT DIES AT AGE OF 88 YEARS
PASSES AWAY THIS MORNING AT THE HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER, MRS. G W. JONES.
CAME TO THIS CITY IN 1900
Was Seventh in Direct Descent from John Sackett, Who Sailed from Bristol, England, in 1630 in Company with Roger Williams--Spent Early Days of His Life in the East- Will Be Buried in Clintonville.
Appleton, Wis., Wednesday, Jan. 18.
Daniel D. Sackett died at 3 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. W. Jones, Park avenue. Mr. Sackett was in his eighty-eigth (sic) year, having been born at Stephenson [Stephentown], Rensselaer County, a few miles east of Albany, New York, on June 14,1823. He was the seventh in direct descent from John Sackett, one of two brothers who sailed from Bristol. England, in December, 1630, in company with Roger Williams for Boston, where they arrived in the February following.
John Sackett was a close friend of Roger Williams and, followed him to Plymouth, and later to the Rhode Island exile. He seemed to have tired, however, of life in the wilderness, and some years later moved to New Haven where he founded what is known as the New Haven Branch of the Sackett family of America.
Daniel Sackett's great-grandfather moved to Stephentown early in the eighteenth century, and it was at the old homestead then established, that Daniel Sackett was born. Mr. Sackett was married first to Harriet S. Hart at Oneida Lake,New York. She died two or three years later leaving an infant daughter Agnes, who grew up and subsequently died in the old home state.
In April, 1853, he was married the second time to Rhoda S. Squier at Manlius, New York, who survives him. Four children were born to them, of whom three survive, Mrs. G. W. Jones, Miss Cora and Miss Mabel Sackett, all of this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Sackett moved to Plainfield, Wisconsin, in 1859, where he conducted a mercantile business for a brief period. About 1862 they moved to Manitowoc, where they lived until 1881, when they moved to Clintonville, and this was their home until they followed their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Jones, to Appleton in 1900.
Mr. Sackett will be laid to rest at Clintonville near his daughter, Ella V. Jones, who was the mother of Roy H. Jones of this city.
Mr. Sackett's mother was a Douglas, and he was a cousin of Dr. Byron Douglas, who was so long and so well known as a resident of Appleton.
