  • 3 Feb 1870: Black men given right to vote
    15th Amendment ratified giving all men the right to vote in the USA, regardless of race, color, or prior slavery. The amendment was certified as part of the U.S. Constitution on 30 Mar 1870. However, voting barriers remained and new ones (such as polling taxes) were instituted until the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

  • 1875: Civil Rights Act of 1875 enacted
    "All persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the accommodations, advantages, facilities, and privileges of inns, public conveyances on land or water, theaters, and other places of public amusement; subject only to the conditions and limitations established by law, and applicable alike to citizens of every race and color, regardless of any previous condition of servitude."
1883 
  • 15 Oct 1883: Civil Rights Act of 1875 declared unconstitutional
    The US Supreme Court ruled the Civil Rights Act of 1875 to be unconstitutional because it illegally banned racial discrimination by private individuals and organizations, rather than state and local governments, because Congress lacked authority to regulate private affairs.

    The US entered the war on 6 Apr 1917. Russia withdrew from the war on 3 March 1918, ceding large territories.

  • 18 Aug 1920: Women's Suffrage
    The Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the right to vote in the USA, was ratified on 18 August 1920 and certified as part of the U.S. Constitution eight days later.
1939 
  • 1 Sep 1939—14 Aug 1945: World War II
    World War II. Japan and China had already been at war since 1937. Germany invaded Poland on 1 Sept 1939, starting the war in Europe. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941, and Germany declared war on the USA a few days later. Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945, and Japan surrendered on 14 Aug 1945.
1950 
  • 25 Jun 1950—27 Jul 1953: Korean War
    The Korean War (also known by other names) was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by the United States and allied countries. The fighting ended with an armistice on 27 July 1953.
