Notes |
- of New Milford, Conn., and Astabula County, Ohio
Both of his parents having died while he was quite young, he was sent to live with a Mr. Bull, who had married one of his mother's sisters.
According to family tradition he was a strong, healthy lad, who in appearance was a full grown man before he had completed his 14th year. The records of "Connecticut in the Revolution: show that:
"Skene Douglas, residence N. Milford, enlisted Jan. 23, 1780, for three years, in Captain Samuel Comstock's Company, of Colonel Heman Swift's Second Regiment of the Connecticut Line." Also that "Skene Douglas, a member of Captain Joseph Allen Wright's Company, of Second Regiment of Connecticut Line, commanded of Colonel Heman Swift, was paid from January 31, 1781." And also that "Skene Douglas Sackett, a Connecticut Revolutionary soldier, residing in the State of Ohio, was a pensioner, under the law of 1818."
The traditional explanation of the dropping of his surname when he enlisted is that he hoped by so doing to prevent his uncle discovering his whereabout and securing his discharge on account of his being under the prescribed age, the inference being that his uncle was a Tory.
The following additional records relating to him were furnished the compiler of this volume by Mr. F. J. Sackett, of Cincinnati, Ohio, one of his lineal descendants: "Skene Douglas Sackett removed from Connecticut to the Whitestone country, as it was then called, in 1798, where he rented a farm on the reservation of the Brotherton Indians, in Oneida County, N. Y. About 1800 he came to Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio. . . . and lived on land that is now a portion of the city of Painesville, until about 1803, when he removed so the township of Mesopotamia, Trumbell County, Ohio, where he lived some two years, removing from there to Windsor, Ashtabula County, Ohio, where he lived the balance of his life, dying June 9, 1852." - [Weygant, p. 113, 167-168]
[NOTE: Research of Roy Crego and a transcription of Capt. Richard Sackett's will indicates that Richard did not have a son named Josiah Crego Sackett. Rather, the reference in the will was to his step son, Josiah Crego. In his book, Weygant used an abstraction of the will which did not show that each time Richard mentioned one of his family he used the full name, including the surname "Sacket", or in the case of his daughters, their married name. The statement; "I leave to my sone Josiah Crego, ..." in the book and the statement in the transcription of the will; " I also give to my Welbeloved son Josiah Crego ..." do not use the surname Sacket. Therefore, we now believe that "Josiah Crego Sackett" did not exist. This leaves us with the task of determining who were the parents of his alledged children. - Thurmon King]

Skene Douglas Sackett«b» «/b»was born in 1765, in New Milford, Connecticut, and died in 1852, in Ashtabula county, Ohio. He served during the latter part of the Revolution, enlisting at the age of fourteen years, in the Second Regiment of Connecticut, under the name of Skene Douglas, so his uncle could not have him discharged. He came to Painesville, Ohio, in 1801, and later moved to Mesopotamia township, Trumbull county, in 1803. He married Hannah Saxton, and their children were: Gary, born February 7, 1789, died February 13, 1866, was a soldier in the War of 1812, and married Julia Adams; Polly, born December 25, 1791, died November, 1855; Elizabeth, born September 7, 1793, died before reaching maturity ; Marvin, born January 23, 1796, died in infancy; Chauncey; and Horace, born September 25, 1803, died March 22, 1870.
Chauncey Sackett was born April 28, 1798, and died October 9, 1863. He was an expert carpenter and joiner, and his work was in great demand on account of its neatness. He was very conscientious and painstaking in every piece of work he turned out. He was a strong Abolitionist, and his house was one of the stations of the "Underground Railway." He was a highly respected citizen, and his death was widely mourned. Mr. Sackett married, October 23, 1828, Sarah Gladding, and they had children as follows: Hannah, born October 3, 1831, died March 18. 1889; Orsemus, born September 26, 1833, died June 10, 1882; Mary A., born May 13, 1840, lives in Cnerry Valley, Ohio, widow of Corvus J. Gray, a farmer, who died September 3, 1899; Lucy E., born October 31, 1845, married Leroy Simmons, and lives in Chicago, Illinois; Fred G., born August 4, 1847, married Ida A. Hess, and lives in Robinson, Illinois; Emily F., born March 24, 1849, married Henry J. Knapp, of Windsor township; and Francis J., born September i, 1856, married Maud Achor, is a traveling salesman, and lives in Cincinnati. Further mention is made of Emily F., in connection with the sketch of her husband, Henry J. Knapp, found elsewhere in this work.
