      Ruth S. Baxter, 79, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2007.

      She was born on June 18, 1928, in Syracuse, a daughter of Walter L. and Esther L. Barrett Sackett. Ruth was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and Potsdam State Teacher's College. She married Jack Tidd Baxter of Utica in 1950. After 53 years of marriage, Jack passed away in 2003. Ruth had a rewarding career as a teacher in the New Hartford Central School District from 1960 to 1984.

      She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica and a past member of the Green Thumb Gardeners, AAUW Mohawk Valley Branch, Alpha Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, Munson Williams Proctor Institute and the Faxton Hospital Auxiliary. She also served on the Board of Directors of the New Hartford Teachers Center and the Retired Teachers Association. She was instrumental in the establishment of an educational nature trail for students at the Higby Rd. (Elliott Hughes) School.

      Ruth is survived by her son, Robert T. Baxter and his wife, Linda, of New Hartford; her daughter, Katharine B. Visser, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; and her grandchildren, Jared John Visser and Tyler Elden Visser, both of St. Louis, Missouri. She was predeceased by her sisters, Betty Sackett and Helen Sackett Keefe.

      The family is grateful to all those who extended compassion to Ruth, including her caregivers and especially Michelle Talerico with whom she shared a very special relationship.

      Friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday (today) from 11-1 at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Funeral services and interment at Crown Hill Memorial Park will be private.
