Wrong-way driver killed in U.S. 74 accident
Motorists tried all kinds of steps to alert a Matthews woman that she was driving the wrong way down busy U.S. 74 between Matthews and Stallings.
"They were blowing their horns and flashing their lights," Trooper W.A. Woolbright of the N.C. Highway Patrol said, "but they didn't get her attention."
The woman crashed head-on into an empty oil tanker. The drivers of two other cars escaped injury as the tanker jackknifed into the median, brushing one of the cars and forcing the driver of the second to swerve down an embankment.
The woman, identified as Patricia Rose Sackette, 22, of 4009 Stallingwood Rd., Matthews, died about 3 a.m. Sunday at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. No one else was injured.
Mr. Woolbright said witnesses spotted Miss Sackette driving east in the westbound lane of U.S. 74 about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Truck driver Timothy Webb of Route 1, Rockingham, told troopers he was heading west on U.S. 74 when the car in front of him suddenly pulled into the left lane, and he saw the Sackette car bearing down on him.
The truck and car, both going about 55 mph, collided head-on, Mr Woolbright said, sending the truck into the median and throwing the car backward onto the shoulder.
The truck brushed a car driven by Samuel Allen of 1704 Icemorelee St., Monroe. Tony Blackman of 1733 Wilmore Dr., Charlotte, drove his car down an embankment to avoid the wreck.
Miss Sackette was an employee of Harris-Teeter Super Markets Inc. at the Quail Hollow Road store. She was a Gaston County native and a member of Stallings United Methodist Church.
Survivors are father, Robert Sackette of Massachusetts; stepfather and mother, Richard and Marlene Ashman of Matthews; brother, Michael Sackette of Fort Bragg; sister, Miss Laura Sackette of Matthews; stepbrothers, Richard Ashman Jr., Michael Ashman, James Ashman, all of Matthews; grandmother, Mrs. Grace Walker of Waterbury, Conn.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stallings United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery East. McEwen Funeral Home, Mint Hill chapel, is in charge.
Memorials can be made to Stallings United Methodist Church, Stallings Road, Matthews, N.C. 28105. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at McEwen Mint Hill chapel.
