Man Dies In Crash
FRANCESVILLE -- A 55-year-old Valparaiso man was killed near here Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 421.
State police said William L. Kerns of 1175 West St. died of a skull fracture and crushed chest in the accident that occurred about three-quarters of a mile north of here.
Kerns was traveling south on U.S. 421, police said, when the car he was driving left the road on the right side, ran into a ditch and continued traveling in the ditch for a short distance. The vehicle returned to the road, veered across and off the highway on the left and struck a utility pole. Police said he was thrown from the car.
He was born April 11, 1918 at Tefft, son of Albert and Mary Jane (Goff) Kerns. On Nov. 13, 1942, he married Ellen Marie Sackett, who survives.
A resident of Porter County since 1959, coming from Cadillac, Mich., he was employed at the Coca-Cola Co. Foods Division in Valparaiso.
Surviving besides the widow are a daughter, Miss Barbara Kerns of Valparaiso; a son, William P. of Kouts; a sister, Mrs. Morris Stinson of Knox; a brother, Bernard of Michigan; and two grandchildren. A daughter preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kosanke Brothers Funeral Home, Kouts, with the Rev. Richard Tison officiating. Burial will be in Wheatfield Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Saturday.
