Clare Carruthers Bovey passed peacefully at her home in Chatham, MA on July 13, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 23, 1934 in Walton-on-Thames, England. She was the daughter of Alexander Norman Carruthers of London, England and Olive Bagley Buttrick of Concord, MA. She leaves her elder brother, William of Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Oliver, of London. Clare's early years where spent in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. When the war came, she with her mother and brothers, moved to Concord, MA. She attended Concord Academy while living at Buttrick Farm. After the war, they returned to Woodbridge where she went to St. Felix School for Girls, which she loved. After a year at Chateau Brilliantmont finishing school in Switzerland, she attended Briarcliff Junior College in New York. While living at Buttrick Farm in Concord, she met and later married Martin (Jim) Koon Bovey Jr, from Carlisle, MA. They have four children, Hilary of Concord, Charles of Mansfield, Elizabeth (Lili) of Woodstock, VT and Jennifer (Jenny) of Chatham. The family summered at Quason Lodge in Chatham where she eventually moved permanently. In addition to her children, she leaves seven grandchildren and many cousins, nieces & nephews on both sides of the Atlantic. Clare was known as a generous guiding force who opened her house and heart to all walks of life. As a contemporary of her children said, "I am a better person for having known Clare" She will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held in Chatham in the fall. In her name, donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod or your charity of choice.
