The San Francisco Examiner (San Francisco, California), 10 Mar 1982, Page 27 Ella Plate Barkan Special to The Examiner PALO ALTO -- Ella Plate Barkan, wife of retired diamond merchant Fritz Barkan, died here Sunday at age 94. She was born in Benicia and grew up in San Jose, where she graduated from high school. She was married to Barkan 68 years ago. Her husband was one of four children of Dr. Adolph Barkan, who came here from Budapest in 1885 to become San Francisco's first eye doctor. He grew up in the Barkan stone mansion at 2209 Laguna St., where he mastered the cello. He maintained an office at 704 Market St. until he retired in 19H0. He was an original member of the Stanford University Orchestra and the Palo Alto Orchestra and still performs occasionally with ensembles. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Barkan is survived by daughters, Louise Klein, of Sausalito, president of the Marin Symphony Auxiliary, and Mary Hanselman, of Alamo; a stepsister, Dr. Agnes Plate; a sister, Mrs. John Galgiani, and four grandchildren, among them Dr. William Salomon, San Francisco, and attorney Barbara Salomon, Denver. Memorial services were to be at 11 a.m. today at the chapel of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 6OO Colorado Ave. Preferred are contributions to the Henry Ohloff House, 601 Steiner St., San Francisco, or St Francis Boys Town, 509 East Elm, Salina, Kan.
