A history and genealogical record of the Alling-Allens of New Haven, Conn., the descendants of Roger Alling, first, and John Alling, sen., from 1639 to the present time . . ., by George P. Allen, 1826; p. 142:

then a waste of hazelnut brush. He went to work and did his part towards clearing the land and building the city, where he resided until his death, August 1, 1898.

Mr. Alling's honesty and integrity in business relations were unquestioned, and he was always held in the highest esteem by the citizens of Rockford. He was at one time an alderman, but his preference for a quiet home life and his native modesty led him to refuse official positions. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church from its founding, and built the first edifice occupied by the society.

Many buildings in and about the city also bear the impress of his skilled workmanship, and with him has passed away about the last pioneer of Rockford,
