Mathew J. Robinson was the son of Matthew & Sarah Barnhill Robinson. He married Elizabeth Butler, August 30, 1843 in Floyd County.

Matthew John Robinson has lived in this city nearly 75 years, being born here October 6, 1820. He was educated in private or pay schools, and learned the trade of making steering and cargo wheels for steamboats when quite a young man, continuing in that business at his shop on the corner of Lower Fourth and Water streets, until about two years ago, when he turned the plant over to his son Charles, who is now operating it. He was an original member of Wesley Chapel M.E. church... and is a veteran fireman, being one of the first volunteers. He was married in 1843, and his children are: William, deceased, Miss Sallie (Sarah) W. Robinson, James Edward Robinson of McLeansboro, Ill., John T. and Frank Robinson, and Mrs. Mary Cane, the latter of Jeffersonville, Mr. Robinson still enjoys good health, and is a highly respected citizen.

Matthew J. Robinson died at a late hour Saturday night at his home on West Second, between Main and Market streets, after a long illness of heart trouble and cancer. He was born in this city seventy-five years ago, and always resided here, following his trade of ship carpenter for many years. His wife died over twenty years ago. He leaves three sons, John Robinson, of this city and Edward and Frank Robinson, of McLeansboro, Ill., and two daughters, Miss Sallie Robinson, of this city and Mrs. Mary Kane, of Jeffersonville. He was a member of Wesley Chapel, and of New Albany Lodge, No.1, I.O.O.F.
