Sherman A. Ludlow, known as "Lud" Ludlow, 86, of Curtis, Michigan, died Saturday afternoon, September 19, 2009, at the Schoolcraft County Medical Care Facility in Manistique.
Born November 2, 1922, in Manistique, son of the late Archie Ludlow and Helen (Sherman) Ludlow, he attended elementary school in Manistique. Lud later moved to Newberry, where he was a standout athlete in basketball, football and track all four years, graduating in 1942. That same year he enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving his country, Lud was wounded in action and honorably discharged on November 4, 1946. He later served in the U.S. Coast Guard, sailing the Great Lakes on the freighter Myron C. Taylor. Following his service in the Coast Guard, Lud was employed by the State of Michigan Road Commission and, in 1960, owned and operated his own business, Lud's Sport Shop, in Curtis until his retirement in 1980. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers.
Lud married the former Roberta Gowan in 1949 and she preceded him in death on January 17, 1994. Also preceding him in death were his parents; stepfather, Dr. William Purmort; sister, Helen Lou Pardee; and stepson, William Gowan.
Survivors included his brothers, John Ludlow and William Purmort; longtime companion, Jackie Stamper; stepson, Fred (JoAnn) Gowan, and daughter-in-law, Marlene Gowan; grandchildren, John (Mary) Gowan, Douglas (Beth) Gowan, Brian (Anne) Gowan, Mary (Jeff) Liska, Greg Gowan and Randy (Cindy) Gowan; and several nieces and nephews.
