Obituary:
John Kern was born in Germany, July 22, 1858, and came to America at the age of seven years. For the past forty-three years he has been a resident of Mayville and vicinity. His death occurred on Feb. 12, 1936, at his home at the corner of Trend and High Street.
On May 15, 1919 he was married to Mrs. Isabelle Fallahay who survives him. He also leaves three daughters by a former marriage, Mrs. John Harris, of Mayville, Mrs. Roy Sherman, of Flint, and Mrs. Stanley Turner, of Detroit, one sister Mrs. John Volz, of Ann Arbor, and one brother Andrew, of Hartford, Conn., five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of friends.
As a boy he was baptized in the Lutheran church and later united with the M.E. church, of Mayville, of which he was an active member. He was a member of Mayville F & A.M. and had held the office of Tyler for several years. He held the office of assessor of the village at the time of his death. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church Sunday afternoon under Masonic rites, with Rev. H.A. Manahan officiating, and burial in Fremont Cemetery.
(Mayville Monitor, February 20, 1936, p. 1.)
Note: On John's grave marker his birthdate is July 22, 1855, but both his obituary and his death certificate show a birthdate of July 22, 1858.
