PHYLLIS A. SPITLER
Green Valley News & Sun (AZ) - Sunday, November 22, 2015
PHYLLIS A. SPITLER
11/19/22 to 11/5/15
Hey, so how many people can say their ancestors came over in the 1600s? That they were personal friends with Milton Hershey? That their great X 4 grandfather wrote "The Night Before Christmas"
Phyllis was a lesson in American history. Born on a farm in Amish Country, Lancaster, Penn., the daughter of a renowned dentist, she would ditch the maids and servants to spend sun up to sunset out fishing or horse backing through the serene hills with the local boys. Summers were spent at her families beach cottage in Stone Harbor, NJ, crabbing, clamming and deep sea fishing.
As a teen she attended and graduated from Stephens Women's College in 1940 in Columbia, Missouri. Working as an RA, she fell in love and married the man of her dreams, Alvin (later one of the founders of FOMC) and had a wonderful life with her husband and two children in St. Louis, MO for 41 years. An avid golfer, skater, swimmer, biker she was always "on the go" and made friends wherever she went.
She retired from a 20-year career in retail with Famous-Barr Dept. stores and moved permanently to GV in 1983. She didn't slow down. Longtime member of Desert Hills and Canoa, golf was her passion, along with her bridge club and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Well known throughout the community, she also tirelessly volunteered for Friends of Madera Canyon and TALGV. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Church in St. Louis and Amado.
No sadness or remorse needed. Her life was truly a celebration! And to you tobacco companies and distilleries, she smoked and drank for 73 years with no ill effects. She died peacefully in her sleep at home Nov. 5, 2015.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 48 years, Alvin, and daughter Laura. She is survived by her son Robert, and grandsons Charles, Benjamin and Matthew. In lieu of flowers please throw a check to the The Animal League of Green Valley or Friends of Madera Canyon.
From all your friends and relatives whose hearts you've touched, both past and present, Ciao. Phyllis, we will miss you. And please don't come back down here to kick my butt for writing all this stuff you didn't want me to write. And with respect to your wishes, only a private memorial service is planned.
