      George R. Hughes SPRINGFIELD - George R. Hughes, age 93 of Springfield, IL died Sunday March 24 at Memorial Medical Center. George was born August 9, 1919 in Fairview, MO, the son of John W. and Brook Harvey Hughes. After graduating from high school in 1936, he was employed in McDonald County, Missouri and later in the state office in Columbia, Missouri working with various Farm Programs. He was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater. He married Marguerite Conner in March 1947 while both worked for the US Department of Agriculture in Columbia, MO. The couple moved to Springfield when George was transferred in 1953 and he worked there at the Department of Agriculture until his retirement in August 1974. George was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving two terms as elder. He also was a lifetime member in the Luncheon Optimist Club, American Legion, and National Active Retirees Federal Employees. He enjoyed traveling, bowling and spending time with his family. He visited all 50 states with Marguerite in their retirement years, including two cruises and many car trips to see his family across the country. His caring attitude toward anyone he met was an inspiration to those who loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Loie Lett, and son William Conner Hughes. He is survived by his wife Marguerite of 66 years, daughter Catherine Doyle (and husband Thomas), daughter-in-law Janice Hughes, 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. Friends may call Wednesday March 27, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 10:00 AM until the time of services there at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Conley Zomermaand officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church 533 S. Walnut St. Springfield, IL 62704 or to the Illinois Presbyterian Home 2005 W.       William Conner Hughes William (Bill) Hughes of Manchaca, Texas, died on Thursday, December 14, 2006, after a long battle with lymphoma. Bill was born December 17, 1949, in Columbia, Missouri, and graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois, in 1967. He served in the United States Air Force from 1969-1973, serving 18 months in Southeast Asia. Bill retired from IBM after working 32 years in widely varied capacities and always had a firm belief that the customer comes first. He let that principle guide him in all his endeavors. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George R. Hughes of Springfield, Illinois; his sister, Catherine Doyle of Anaheim, California; his son, Matthew of Austin; his grandson, Colton of Austin; his daughter, Holly A. Poremski, DVM and husband, Mike of Austin; their families and his loving wife, Janice A. Hughes of Manchaca, Texas. Janice was his true life partner and he cherished the time he was allowed to spend with her. Bill was an active competitor in the shooting sports and competed in the National Sporting Clay Championships, the National Hunter Benchrest Championships and was an avid hunter as well. His one true love in life was competing with his wife, Janice. The Hughes family is extremely grateful for the support of so many friends and extended family over the last 19 months. After a small service for immediate family, a memorial gathering for our many friends will be held at a later date.
