      Viola Maxine Hertzler

      HERTZLER Viola Maxine, (87), of Oklahoma City, died January 30, 2003 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Born February 23, 1915 in Aline, Oklahoma to Josiah and Nola Sackett. Married Jay Hertzler January 1, 1937 in Aline where they farmed and raised a family. Served the Aline community many years as leader in 4-H and Methodist church activities. She completed her college education by joining her children at Northwestern State College, and received a degree in English and Home Economics in 1961, followed by years of teaching in area high schools. In 1972 retired with her husband to Estes Park, Colorado, where for the next 25 years they hiked numerous trails in Rocky Mountain National Park, traveled throughout the world, and enjoyed hosting friends and family in their home. Was a founding member of the United Methodist Church of Estes Park and spent years as a volunteer in the hospital guild and other community organizations. Enjoyed life-long interests in gardening, bird-watching, ceramics, pottery, and books. Preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survived by sister Evelyn Shorter of Alamogordo, NM; four children: Donald Hertzler of Weatherford, OK, Barbara Powell of Jackson, MS, Phyllis Robertson of Oklahoma City, Linda Hertzler- Crum of Weatherford, OK; seven grandchildren: Diane Anderson of Ponca City, OK, Donna Sylvester of Drumwright, OK, Becky Powell of Santa Barbara, CA, Chris Powell of Cleveland, MS, Greg Powell of Jackson, MS, Jennifer Bukralia of Spearfish, SD, Michael McKinney of Stillwater; OK; four great grandchildren; and three nephews. She was American mother to Salman Siddiqi of Glencoe, MD. Donations may be made to United Methodist Missions or American Heart Association. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 A.M., Feb. 22 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 11600 N. Council Rd. OKC.
