Since I sent the original info in, a transcript of his son-in-law, Silas Odell's bible has been found, which gives his date of birth as 1833 and date of death as 1871.

      Jonathan Sackett Finney

      Birth
      11 Jun 1833

      Death

      Burial

      Jasper County, Illinois, USA

This Jonathan Sackett Finney, one of three living simultaneously in the area where Clark, Jasper, and Cumberland Counties meet, was the son of Damon and Elizabeth (Kelly) Finney.

He married Susan Metheny, a daughter of James and Rhoda (Bell) Metheny in 1852.

He and his wife both died between the censuses of 1870 and 1880. They were both buried in unmarked graves, probably in Leamon Cemetery, since multiple family members are buried there and it is the cemetery closest to their last known residence.

Some of their descendants had a stone placed in their memory where we believe Jonathan Sackett Finney is buried, between his brother Ira and his father. If Susan is, in fact, buried in Leamon Cemetery, she is most likely a few feet south of J.S., with at least one burial in between.

      Genealogical note
In early 2021, a secondary source was located that gives dates of birth and death for J.S. and Susan Finney. It seems to be derived from a Bible record started by their daughter Mary and continued after her death by her widower's third wife. The dates in this record are consistent with their census returns and have been used on the stone.

Damon Finney, an old pioneer of Johnson township, was found dead in his bed on Thursday, the 14th. Mr. FInney was living with his grandson, James Finney. About 3 o'clock in the morning, his grandson went to the bed to see if the old gentleman wanted anything; he said that he did not. About 4 o'clock, upon getting up to build the fire, James went to the bed and found his grandfather dead.

Mr. F. was over eighty-six years of age. He relates that he was in Cincinnati when Gen. Harrison started from that place to attack the British and Indians in northern Ohio. He says that he was then about seven or eight years old.

About one year ago, he was stricken with paralysis, from which he never recovered. He was buried in the Leamons cemetery.
