MOSELEY (54, Mawdsley). This revision (with the exception of bracketed portions) of this family compiled and furnished by Rev. G. S. Dickerman of Amherst, Mass. The earlier spelling of the name was Maudsley. According to the MS. of Miss Emily Moseley, deceased, of Glastonbury, Conn., for which we arc indebted for many facts here given, "the latest use of this form in this region is on the monumental table in the old graveyard in Glastonbuiy, Conn., erected in memory of Capt. Joseph Maudsley, in 1719. On a small slab near it is Modesley. The next to it is Moseley, and it has been so written since . . . .
"John Modesley, thus the ancient record reads, had two wives, Elizabeth and Cicely. He died in 1661, and his wife Cicely in the same year. They left a son and daughter who are named, in Cicely Moseley's will, John and Elizabeth. There was a son Thomas, by the first wife, who was the ancestor of a branch which settled in the vicinity of Boston."
Lieut. [John (s. of John and Cicely above-named), bo’t land in W., 1664, of Aaron Cook, then of Hadley, Mass. — the Cook place second N. of the Palizado — which he sold, 1677. to Joseph Whiting of Hartford, and rem. to Westfield, Mass.. but ret. to and owned a mill in Windsor, where he died 18 Aug. (or 10 Feb.), 1690; est. valued £228; also ho. and lds. at Westlield, valued at £543; he was adm. to W. Ch., 7 Oct., 1666 (O. C. R.)] From MS. of Mr. Sam. Judd of Northampton we learn that "the est. was sett. 1706; four sons, Joseph, Consider, John, Comfort, had land; two eldest not rec. in Westfield; Benjamin ment. in will." [He m. 14 Dec, 1664, Mary (dau. Benj. and Mary Allyn) Newberry. — O. C. R. She contrib. to the Conn. Fund of 1670 for Relief of Poor in Other Colonies, 8s. 6d.— O. C.
