Obituary
Western Reserve Chronicle, 21 Oct 1863 - Abstract
"Simeon Sackett Sr. - Canfield, 18 Sept., 74y"
Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 4 Mar1898, Article No. 57, by Dr. Jackson Truesdale
Excerpt:
"The old Canfield families of Hayeses, Deans and Sacketts were allied to each other by marriage. We have the space and it will be in order to refer to one of these. Simmons Sackett, son of Benjamin, was born in Warren, Litchfield county, Conn., Sept. 8th, 1788, and came to Canfield when yet a single man in 1810, and made his home for several years with his brother-in-law, David Hine. Sept. 12th, 1815, he married Eda, the eldest daughter of David Hayes as referred to in foregoing sketch, since writing which we have learned that Eda Hayes was born in Cornwell, Conn., in 1795, and the same year the family removed to Vermont. As soon as Simmons and Eda were married they settled upon a farm nearly two miles west of Canfield, a farm afterwards owned by the late Banner Williams. Upon this farm the husband and wife spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. Sackett prospered as a farmer. As wealth was measured in the early days Mr. Sackett was said to be rich, and probably was the most forehanded man, at one time, in the township. He had a large scope of land to farm, which required much hired help. This was especially so during harvest. It is no unusual thing even now to hear old men speak of helping "Sim" Sackett in hay harvest. The soil was fresh and productive, the average yield of grass and most of other crops greater than at present. Every stalk of this was cut by the scythe, sickle or cradle. Every pound was handled over and over again by human muscles. The harvests on large farms began the last of June and continued from six to nine weeks. The wages paid for able-bodied men ranged from 50 to 75 cents per day. But a day then meant quite a different thing from a day now. The hired man who did not present himself for duty before the sun was fairly up was looked upon as a laggard. The day's work closed with the going down of the sun, but often still later. The mowing of the grass was a tedious process, but often there was something inspiring about it. I would yet walk a mile to see six, eight or ten men mow a clean meadow with the uniformity of motion the old timers were capable of doing. No military precision could excel. The swish of the scythe, the uniform step, the sway of the body, all in perfect harmony. Such opportunities we imagine were not rare in the fields of Mr. Sackett.
While Simons was prospering without, his wife Eda was no less busy within. A new and commodious house took the place of the abandoned cabin. Children one after another in regular order came to surround the family board and numbered from 1 to 12. From the beginning Mr. Sackett and wife were earnest members and promoters of the Disciple church, and perhaps were more instrumental than anyone else in building and establishing that church at the center some 50 years ago. After Mr. Sackett had accumulated more than enough of property to secure himself against poverty and want during old age, after becoming well advanced in years, this man of strong sense and of business thrift and enterprise met with the greatest calamity that can happen an intelligent being in the loss of his reason. How long this continued before relieved by death we do not remember. So violent was the malady that his friends found it necessary to put him under restraint, and while thus restrained, died suddenly in his room when no one was present. Shortly after his death the remaining portion of his family sold out and removed to Iowa. Of Mr. Sackett's children we can only say that two died when young - four remain single. Freeman married Lois Scott, an adopted daughter of William and Adeline Hines; Clarinda married Clark Chidester, remembered by some of us. They went west in the fifties. In early days a brother of Simmons by the name of Freeman or Justice, was for some years a resident of Canfield. Myron Sackett, who owned the farm and built the brick part of the residence now occupied by P.T. Jones, was a brother of Simmons. One of his sons married Fidelia Turner, who after when a widow, married Julius Tanner. At a later date Deacon Moses Sackett, a good man, came and spent the last years of his life with us. He also was a brother. Of all these and all having children more or less numerous, not one of the name or anyone with Sackett blood in their veins can be found in Canfield.
I find in a memorandum furnished me by Mr. Eastman, a statement that David Hayes, the pioneer of whom we speak in this article, was a full cousin of the late Rutherford B. Hayes, ex-president of the United States. I have given attention to this matter and find that David Hayes and the father of the ex-President, lived nearly in the same vicinity in Vermont before coming to Ohio. This fact is corrobative of the claim of kinship, but it may not be that of a full cousin. David was born in 1768, Rutherford in 1822. It is not supposable that full cousins would differ so greatly in age. I do not question the fact that the ancestors of Rutherford B. Hayes and David Hayes can be traced back to one common New England parentage. This would make the kinship more remote but leaves abundant room to be thus remotely connected with so honorable a personage. J. TRUESDALE. (To be continued.)"

CHIDESTER, Clark
Husband of Clorinda nee SACKETT ? m. 2 Mar 1843
Son of Erastus and Lydia Sackett Chidester
B. 14 Apr 1818 in Portage Co. OH
D. 10 Feb 1885 in IL at 66y 9m 26d
Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 17 Apr 1885
"February 10th, at his home north of this city, occurred the death of Clark Chidester, one of the best known citizens of that part of the county. Mr. Chidester was born in Portage County, O., April 14th, 1818. In his youth he moved to Canfield, where, March 2nd, 1843, he was married to Clorinda Sackett, who survives him. A short time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Chidester removed to Trumbull County, Ohio, but again removed to Canfield. In June 1863 they removed to Illinois, and after a four year residence removed to this county, where they have since made their home. At the age of 12 years Mr. Chidester joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, but not being satisfied with his infant baptism was immersed at Ellsworth, Ohio, by Rev. Marcus, when in his 24th year. While living at Richland Grove, Ill., he and his wife both united with the Christian Church, with which denomination they continued their connection upon their removal to this county. Deceased was the father of three sons, one of whom died at Richland Grove, at the age of 3 ½ years. The others, S. E. and F. G. Chidester, now reside in this county, as do also two brothers, Julius and W. N. Chidester. Deceased had lived the life of the consistent Christian. He was a kind and indulgent husband and father and a faithful friend. Devoted to his family and friends, he never sought public place of notoriety. He was a quiet, unobtrusive man, and always held an enviable place in the opinions of those with whom he associated. His remains were interred in this city on Friday last. The funeral service was conducted by elder Stevens, of the Christian Church, and the remains interred with Masonic honors."
