Palmer, (Slocum, Bowen & Co.), 466 (Reliability: 2).
From Kari Roehl:
GOODRICH, HIRAM. Son of Alvin and Pauline Monroe Goodrich, was born in Cayuga County, New York, August 7, 1814. He was given the advantages of a common school education, and resided on a farm until he was twenty-one years of age. He then moved to Berrien County, Michigan, where he began life as a laborer. In 1840 he began the livery business in Niles, Michigan, which he conducted in connection with farming until 1853 when he came to California. In February of that year he proceeded to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he fitted up ox-teams and started across the plains, coming via the old Carson route, by Salt Lake. He arrived in California, in September, 1853, and immediately joined his brother-in-law, Isaac Sackett, in Napa County, and began farming. In the spring of 1857 he settled on his present place, consisting of one hundred and sixty-four acres, and is engaged in wheat and grape growing. In 1864 he took charge of the Revere House in Napa, and conducted it for thirteen months. He was married December 25, 1840, to Miss Etta Sackett, who was born in Sodus, Wayne County, New York, April 8, 1822. Their children are Harriet J., Luman L., Alice, Ida R., Lee G., and Minnie E. They have lost one child, Lilburn, aged five years, five months and twenty days.

Death of Hiram Goodrich
Another old resident has gone over to the silent majority. Hiram Goodrich, after an illness of one year and nine months, closed his eyes upon earthly scenes Sunday morning, June 2nd, 1889, at the family residence, coiner Ash and Randolph streets, this city. His affliction was paralysis.
Mr. Goodrich was born in Cayuga county, N. Y., August 7, 1814. He was given the advantages of a common school education and at 21 moved to Berrien county, Mich. In 1840 he began the livery business in Niles, which he conducted in connection with farming until 1853, when he came to California via the old Carson route. In September of the year named he joined his brother-in-law, Isaac Sacket, in this county and began farming. In the Spring of '57 he settled on the farm he had so long owned--west of Napa, on the Sonoma road. In 1864 he took charge of the Revere House in this city and was its manager for a term of thirteen months. Deceased was married in 1840 to Miss Etta Sacket, who, with six children, is left to mourn the loss of one who for nearly half a century had been her companion. The eldest daughter, Mrs. T. H. Ink lives in St. Helena, another, Mrs. Hopkins lives in Petaluma, and a third, Mrs. Ragsdale lives in Oregon. One of the three sons, Lumun L., is in San Antone, Texas; the other two live in Napa. The funeral was held from the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon.

MRS. GOODRICH SUDDENLY CALLED
The many friends in this city and Vicinity of Mrs. M. E. Goodrich, beloved pioneer woman, will learn with the deepest regret of her sudden death at San Francisco, last evening, the details of her passing not having been received here up to press time. The news came to her relatives here and her nephew, Willet Hopkins, and life left early this morning for San Francisco to take charge of the body and arrange for the funeral. Until they return, the details will not be known.
Mrs. Goodrich was a splendid woman and was born at Napa and had spent practically all of her life either in that city or in Petaluma. She was a sister of the late Mrs. M. D. Hopkins and an aunt of Willet and Hiram Hopkins of this city, Mrs. John White of Denver, and Mrs. Ed. Cullen of San Francisco. She also leaves a brother, Luman Goodrich of Napa county and her sisters, Mrs. Jennie Ink of Stockton and Mrs. Ida Ragsdale of Idaho. She also leaves many other relatives and countless friends to mourn her passing.
Mrs. Goodrich was for many years a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a splendid woman who has done much good in her long and honorable life, and who was held In the highest esteem. She resided for years with her nephews and last fall went to San Francisco to remain for a while and there passed away. She was remarkably youthful and well preserved for her years and it was hoped would be spared for many more years of usefulness.
Among the older residents nobody was better known and nobody was held in higher regard, for she has led a splendid life which was filled with well doing and no act of kindness was too great for her to perform. Her death came with tragic suddenness and is regretted by all who knew the loved Californian.
