Hazel M. Nighbert, age 81, of Rapid City passed away Saturday, August 20, 2005 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Hazel was born in Murdo, SD to Dora and Harry Hitchcock on October 7, 1923. She graduated High School in Murdo in 1940. Hazel moved to Deadwood, SD in 1941, she married James (Jack) Brownlow in 1947 and they moved to Rapid City in 1952.She worked at several cafes and restaurants as a cook, this was one of Hazels joys in life to be able to cook for family and friends. In 1971 she married Wayne Nighbert. Hazel loved attending every activity her children and grandchildren were involved in, she was their biggest fan. She managed her youngest step-daughters Little League Softball team which she enjoyed very much. She was able to travel with her sister, in her 60s she learned to swim and swam frequently at the YMCA. She was involved in TOPS, and enjoyed socializing with her Special friends who taught her to play Bridge. The true love in her life was her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Survivors include three sons: James and Michelle Brownlow of Monroe, WA, David and Caroline Brownlow of Glendale, AZ, and Richard and Betty Brownlow of Denver, CO; two daughters: Janice and Kenny Durst of Mantorville, MN and Maxine and Gene McGhan of Rapid City; four step-sons: Wayne and Sandy Nighbert of Leavenworth, KS, Daniel and Brenda Nighbert of Forty Fort, PA and Michael and Sherri Nighbert of Willis, TX, and Timothy and Sandy Nighbert of Piedmont, SD; two step-daughters Norma and Pat Garcia of Rapid City and Nancy and Mark Leonard of Lexington, KS; two sisters Esther and Alan Porter of Dayton, IA and Lois and EJ Cates of Houston, MO; 30 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Jack Brownlow and Wayne Nighbert; sisters Ruth and Doris; son Paul Brownlow and grandson Scott Borgstrom. A memorial visitation will be from 5-7pm on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with a prayer service at 7pm. A memorial service will be at 11am on Thursday, August 25 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Rapid City. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established.

Services for Wayne W. Nighbert are scheduled Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, under direction of Behrens Mortuary.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Behrens Mortuary, and burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery.
He died Sunday morning at Fort Meade Veterans Hospital after a long Illness. He was born Feb. 11, 1926 at Madison, and lived there until 1959 when be moved to Rapid City.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, the VFW and the plumbers union.
Survivors include his widow, Hazel, of Rapid City; sons, Wayne T. and Daniel, both tn the U.S. Navy; Michael and Timothy of Rapid City; daughters, Nancy of Rapid City and Norma Garcia of Scottsbluff, Neb.; his mother, Ada Nighbert of Whlttler, Calif.; two brothers, Tom, Richland, Wash., and Keith from New Hampshire; two sisters, Betty, Lincoln, Neb., and Elaine, Waltham, Mass., and six stepchildren.
