SMITH, Opal Frances Ethel
Our
loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother completed
her long journey to heaven on January 15, 2008. She left on her journey
peacefully at the age of 92 surrounded by all her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Our mother was born on July 15,
1915 in Sorento, Illinois to Ada Pearl and Martin Alfred Ingles. Her
parents passed away during childhood, and Opal was raised by her
mother's half-sister and her husband; Ida and Burl Wyatt, of White
Hall, Illinois. Opal lived most of her childhood and teenage years in
White Hall, Illinois where she graduated from White Hall High School in
1933. Following high school our mother went to Saint Louis, Missouri
and attended Rubican Business College. After attending college, our
mother set off to use the skills she learned in college, first working
in St. Louis, Missouri, then Carrollton, Illinois, and later working in
the San Francisco, California area. While in California, our mother met
her late husband, Carroll Robert Smith, and they were wed in Petaluma,
California on May 13, 1945. Together, they had five children: Carol
Sue, Nancy Ann, Bert James, Mary Jane, and Katherine Jean. In 1948 they
moved to Coulee Dam, Washington where she would live for the next 60
years raising her family. Opal's entire life revolved around her
children. She was a loving, caring, and devoted mother; and always put
her children's interests first. She was each of her children's closest
and best friend. Opal's proudest achievement was that her five children
all attended college and obtained degrees. After her children finished
college, Opal loved to travel, and each year would travel back to
Illinois and Maine visiting relatives and childhood friends. During
those yearly trips she would always make her rounds and visit each of
her children; enjoying spending time with her 13 grandchildren, and 3
great-grandchildren. Opal always looked forward to each summer in
Coulee Dam, Washington when her children and grandchildren would arrive
and spend portions of the summer with her. Opal also loved to read,
work cross-word puzzles, and visit with her many friends. She always
had a sharp wit and mind, right to the very end. Opal was preceded in
her death by her parents and step-parents; her husband; and a sister,
Gladys Titsworth. She is survived by her daughter Carol Hayes of
Spokane, Washington; daughter Nancy Darnell of Priarie Village, Kansas;
son Bert Smith of Norman, Oklahoma; daughter Mary Jane Smith-West
(husband Terry) of Portland, Oregon; daughter Katherine Russell
(husband Bill) of Spokane, Washington; stepson Bobby Smith (wife Mary
Lou) of Salem, Oregon; and care-giver and friend Pat Nieberding of
Coulee Dam, Washington. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren:
Ann, Margaret, Mary Cecelia, James, Will, Lindsay, Leah, Rachel,
Zachary, Jacob, Hannah, Bill Jr., and Laura; and her 3
great-granddaughters: Cameron, Maren, and Mira. Her grandchildren
adored her. She will be deeply missed by all. Interment will be in
Spring Canyon Cemetery near Grand Coulee, Washington where she can keep
watch over her children and grandchildren at the nearby beach. Services
will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel
of Strate Funeral Home in Grand Coulee, WA,
STRATE FUNERAL HOME, Grand Coulee, WA is caring for the family.
