DIES AT HIS DINNER.
SUDDEN DEMISE OF JUSTICE OF THE PEACE DANIEL L WHEELER.
Is Dining with His Wife and Her Cousin When Death Overtakes Him--Is Talking Pleasantly When He Gives a Gasp and Sinks Back in His Chair Dead . . .
Daniel L. Wheeler. North Town Justice of the Peace, died suddenly while sitting at his dinner table at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Wheeler and her cousin, Miss Sarah A. Colvin, were at the table with him. Although he had been ill nearly a year and confined to his home, No. 60 Wisconsin street, since Jan. 2, Mr. Wheeler's condition was not thought to be dangerous. In fact, he had been unusually cheerful during the day, and at the table was talking of prospects of taking a carriage ride through the parks next Sunday and of being able to go to his office shortly.
Mrs. Wheeler and Miss Colvin noticed him raise his hands, give one gasp, and sink down, limp, in the chair. They immediately sent for Dr. Everett, the family physician, and also summoned two other doctors living rear, but there was nothing they could do. Life was extinct.
Mr. Wheeler suffered three attacks of the grip, the last one of which left him afflicted with a complication of diseases and heart trouble. Since Jan. 2 he had only been out of the house once, and that was on election day, when some of his friends took him to the polls to vote.
While raised in Milwaukee, the home of his parents, Daniel L. Wheeler was born Jan. 15, 1850, at Steventown (sic), N. Y. He graduated from Racine College, studied law in the office of Judge Jenkins and Matt Carpenter, and at the age of 21 was admitted to the bar. He went direct to Boston and practiced his profession there until 1878, when on account of poor health he came West, located in Chicago, and engaged in newspaper work on The Tribune and other papers until he was appointed Justice of the Peace for the North Town eight years ago. He was reappointed four years ago, and was one of only two of the successful candidates who received the unanimous vote of the Judges. He was appointed for the third time three weeks ago. He was married in 1892 to Adelaide M. Clarke. He was a benevolent, kind-hearted, generous man and had hosts of friends among all classes.
The body will be taken to Milwaukee and buried in the family lot in Forest Home Cemetery. The funeral will take place from the residence at 9:30 a. m. tomorrow to the Northwestern depot and from there to Milwaukee on the 11:30 train. Mr. Wheeler was a Mason; also a member of the Elks and the Red Men. He leaves a sister, Mrs. W. A. Noell of Milwaukee, two half-sisters, and a half-brother to mourn his loss.
