  of New York City Mrs. Lamb, in her "History of New York City," says: "John Alsop was a importing merchant and accumulated a handsome fortune. He took an active part in the patriotic measure of the New York merchants; was, in 1770, one of the Committee of Inspection to enforce the Non-Importation Agreement; was, in 1774, a member (and deputy chairman) of the Committee of Fifty-one, chosen to unite the Colonies in measures of resistance, and the same year was chosen delegate to the first Continental Congress. He was one of the Committee of One Hundred and elected to Congress in 1775. He resigned his seat on the Declaration of Independence and retired with his family to Middletown, Conn. He returned to New York after the war and was an active and useful member of society until his death in 1794." Riker, in his records of "The Alsop Family," differs with Mrs. Lamb, and says that John Alsop "was not in Congress, as has been supposed, when the independence of the American Colonies was declared, but was, at the time, a member of the New York Convention, and, on the adoption of the above measures by the latter body he resigned his seat. He survived the Revolution and was for several years a vestryman of Trinity Church."

Memorial ID 11001450 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11001450 Mary Frogat Alsop Birth unknown Death 14 Apr 1772 Burial Trinity Churchyard Manhattan, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USA Born c.1744, 28-year-old Mary Alsop (nee Frogat) was the wife of the noted John Alsop, who later served in the Continental Congress. She had married the wealthy merchant, who was some twenty years her senior, on June 6, 1766. Three years later she gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Mary, who in time became the wife of Rufus King, a signer of the US Constitution. Mrs. Alsop's gravestone, like that of her father-in-law's nearby, appears to be the work of the noted Manhattan carver John Zuricher. It is somewhat unusual in that it was not carved brown sandstone, as were the majority of gravestones in the NY-NJ area during the colonial era. The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF MARY ALSOP, WIFE OF JOHN ALSOP, MERCHANT, WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 14TH OF APRIL 1772 AGED 28 YEARS"
