      Edward O. Newman

      Edward Orphus Newman was born October 2, 1843, in Carthage, Campbell County, Kentucky, and departed this life at Pasco, Washington, March 8th, aged 76 years, 5 months and 6 days.

      Mr. Newman lived in Kentucky until he was 23 years of age when he and his parents moved to Buckley, Illinois, where be lived on a farm for five pears. In 1871, when the Village or Roberts was started he came here and entering a partnership with W. B. Flora, started a general merchandise store under the name of Flora & Newman. They remained here for about twelve years. Since then be has lived in Galesburg, Sibley, Strawn and Paxton.

      In 1S74 he married Miss Emma Nelson of Buckley. To this union were born six children, Horace, Forest, Earl W., Myrtle, Adlai and Emma Loeta. Three of these children survive him. They are Earl W. and Miss Myrtle of Pasco, Washington, and Adlai of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Kempler of Joplin, Missouri, Mrs. Joseph V. King and Mrs. William B. Flora of Chicago; and one brother Frank Newman of Urbana.

      Mrs. Newman died in 1886 and later Mr. Newman married Mrs. Mary Davis of Roberts who died December 20, 1918.

      The deceased is well remembered by the older residents of Roberts as be was one of the principal citizens of the place in its early days and did his part in building up the community. He ass one of the official board of the Methodist Church here when the first church building was erected here. He also took a leading part in public improvements and the up building of the community. Since leaving here he has retained a warm spot in his heart for Roberts and has taken an interest in all our affairs. For the past ten years he has lived in Paxton where he wrote insurance and served the public as Justice of the Peace until about six mouths ago when failing health caused him to go to Washington where he could be with his children.

      The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church in Roberts, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. D. G. DuBois officiating. The remains were than (sic) laid to rest in Lyman Cemetery.
