Joy Hume Falk dies; memorial rites Sunday
Joy Hume Falk, 68. of 1476 Clairmont Place, died yesterday at her home.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Edgehill United Methodist Church. The Rev. William (Bill) Barnes will officiate.
Her body was donated to Meharry Medical College.
Mrs. Falk was born in Changsha, China, to missionary parents and had spent the past 25 years in Nashville.
She was married to Dr. Leslie Falk, a retired professor of community medicine at Meharry Medical College. He survives.
Mrs. Falk was a graduate of Vassar College and did graduate work at the Art Students League in New York1 City.
She was founder of Hope Incorporated, a not-for-profit organization that assisted low income housing residents. She was also founder and president of the Nashville chapter of the US-China People Friendship organization, an organization she founded in 1976 which promotes cultural ex change between the two countries, sponsors trips from the VS. to China and provides support to Chinese students studying in Nashville.
Mrs. Falk, a member of the board of directors of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was to receive that group's Humanitarian Award in February.
In December, she was co-recipient with her husband of the Tennessee American Civil Liberties Bill of Rights Award. She received the Metro Human Relations Award in 1983.
Survivors also include a sister, Charlotte Freeman, Bryn Mawr, Pa.; two daughters, Gail Falk, Atlanta, and Elizabeth Falk, New York City, two sons, Theodore, Portland, Ore, and Donald Falk, Cambridge, Mass, and eight grandchildren.
The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the Joy H. Falk Fund in care of Edgehill United Methodist Church.
