Anthony Reid the former director-manager of the Sacramento Civic Theater and former execute director of the California Arts Commission died Thursday in a Salem, Ore., hospital after an illness. He was 63.
Before coming to Sacramento in 1953, Mr. Reid was a well-known teacher and director at his alma mater, then-College of the Pacific in Stockton, and was technical director of the Pacific Theater.
He came to Sacramento as an educational director of the repertory theater and was named director-manager a year later, serving in that position for 12 years. He was appointed executive director of the California Arts Commission in 1966. He resigned that position a year later.
Mr Reid was named executive director of the newly established Oregon State Arts Commission in 1967. He later moved to Washington, D.C., as executive director of the American Educational Theater Association. Several years ago Mr. Reid returned to Salem where his last major project was the restoration of a woolen mill as a producing mill and a historical display.
A native of Yuma, Ariz., he spent most of his life in California. He attended Bakersfield Junior College and San Jose State University before enrolling at Pacific, where he earned his bachelor?s and master?s degrees. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Reid is survived by his wife, June Wilde Reid of Salem; sons, Brian and Eric, and daughters, Deborah Reid, Jennifer Smith and Rebecca Reid, all of Oregon and sisters, Shirley Hewitt of Sacramento and Elise Brewer of Oxnard.

REID JUNE WILDE
Oct 31, 1923-Jan 11, 2003
Our sweet Mother was born in Tulsa, OK in 1923. She moved with her family to Sacramento, CA in 1932. After graduating from McClatchey High School in 1941, June was accepted to the College of Pacific in Stockton where she earned her college degree in Theater Arts. She toured Europe after the war to entertain the occupying troops as a Civilian Actress Technician. In 1946 she married Anthony Reid and settled in Sacramento. June remained active in the theatre and appeared in several productions at the Sacramento Civic Theatre and Music Circus. Her performance as Eleanor Roosevelt in "Sunrise at Campobello" led to a brief correspondence between the actress and the former First Lady. Five years after having her fifth child, June earned her teaching degree and began the career she would remain in for twenty-one years. After teaching third grade for three years at Peter Burnett Elementary in Sacramento, the Reid family moved to Salem, OR in 1968, where June began her first of 18 years teaching first and second grade children at Clear Lake Elementary School. Not yet ready to abandon the theatre, June briefly returned to the stage at the Pentacle Theatre in Salem star in "Ladies In Retirement" in 1978. She distinguished herself in her acting profession as well as her teaching profession. After retiring from the classroom in 1986 and following the closing of her beloved Clear Lake School some years later, she was honored in August 2002 when the Keizer community named the street that runs in front of the new Forest Ridge Elementary, June Reid Place. June was also a member of PEO. She was dearly loved by her family, her students, and her friends. June was widowed in 1983. She is survived by her brothers Tom and Chuck, both of Sacramento. She also leaves her five children: Brlan of Coupeville, WA; Eric of Ashland, OR; Deborah Denno of Salem; Jennifer Correia of San Jose, CA; and Rebecca Canning of Annapolis, MD. She leaves 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at Sunnyslope Christian Reformed Church, 197 Hrubetz Rd. SE, Salem at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 1.
