      William Shackleford Obituary

William "Bill" Edwin Shackelford passed away on April 19, 2022. Bill was born on October 9, 1927 to Justin and Bessie Shackelford in Hale Center, Texas where his parents farmed. Bill remembers his mother schooling him on the names of his 50 first cousins. Better farming brought their family to Clarinda, Iowa where Bill completed high school and enlisted in the Navy in 1944.

By 1951 Bill had moved to Marshalltown, IA and began his studies in chemical engineering at Iowa State University. Bill worked many years for General Mills and began to focus on engineering industrial paint products. Bill came west to work for Boeing with his wife, Madeline and children Eletha, Jeff and Theresa; his youngest son Rodney was born in Seattle. At Gaco Western Bill held the position of Vice President and served for years as President of the PNW Society for Coatings Technology.

In 1995, Bill was a co-founder of a new company named Volatile Free Inc. There Bill led the industry in the development of silicone roof coverings until his retirement in 2005.

Bill met his wife Elizabeth, "Liz", and her children Will and Ruth. Bill and Liz were married at St. Mathews' Lutheran Church in 1977; and lived in Brier, WA.

Bill and Liz enjoyed many rewarding years at St Mathews', where Liz focused on assisting southeast Asian families relocating in the wake of the Vietnam War. Those relationships continued for decades. Bill and Liz joined the newly merged Edmonds Lutheran Church in 2005. Bill was a devoted caregiver of Liz until her passing in 2013.

Bill started a new chapter in 2014 when he moved to Cristwood Park in Shoreline, WA and spent many active years there. In 2015 Bill proposed to Barbara Elias and they were married at Edmonds Lutheran in 2016. Bill lived at Cristwood Park until he moved into the Adult Family Home of Josie Borromeo. Josie and her staff Ruby partnered with Barbara to provide excellent care for Bill for the many months he lived there.

Everyone who experienced Bill knew him as a gentle, witty, humble, and compassionate man. He always felt that at his heart he was a farm boy, and his early experiences were part of his imaginative stories. Bill and his stepdaughter Ruth Johnson were devoted to each other and had many rewarding years as father and daughter. Ruth's husband Steve and son Ryan and his other grandchildren; Asami, Kenny, Lindsey, Raine, Victoria, and great-grandsons Milo and Mizuki were very important people to Bill.

Earlier this year Ruth asked Bill where his mind goes when reflecting on his life. He answered that "I'm still inventing paint!"

A Memorial Service will be held at Edmonds Lutheran Church on June 18th at 1pm. Remembrances in memory of Bill are requested to be made directly to the St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlane, SD or the Learning Center at Edmonds Lutheran Church.
