CLINTON — Caroline Irene Whitehead, 91, formerly of Clinton, a lifelong DeWitt County resident, died Monday (June 13, 2011) at the Villages of Jackson Creek, Continuing Care Facility, Independence, Mo.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with a graveside service immediately following at DeWitt Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton Christian Church Young at Heart group.

Caroline was born July 5, 1919, in rural DeWitt County, daughter of Fred and Tessona Newberry Thrasher. She married Charles Dean Whitehead on April 10, 1935. He died June 24, 1998. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Adeline and Ona; and three brothers, Donald, Sherman and Thurman.

She is survived by her children, Wayne (Linda) Whitehead, Columbia, Mo.; Paul (Peggy) Whitehead, Simpsonville, S.C.: Freda (David) Brown, Independence, Mo.; and David (Carol) Whitehead, Allen, Texas; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Caroline lived all of her life in DeWitt County until the last two years, when she moved to Independence, near her daughter and some of her grandchildren. She lived 64 years in the same family home in DeWitt, where she raised her family. Caroline loved life and was very proud of her children. She loved to spend time with them playing softball and basketball, taking them swimming and fishing and helping them with their homework.

Caroline was active and energetic almost her entire life. She raised her children for the first 20 years of her marriage, then joined General Electric in 1955. She then worked 25 years at Revere in Clinton, until she retired.

She was a true patriot and displayed the American flag inside and outside her home. Caroline loved bowling, her yard of flowers and trees, and the birds she fed and watered. She enjoyed working in her garden and canning fruits and vegetables.

After retirement, Caroline made beautiful, queen-size quilts for each of her four children. Caroline had a love for photography and made scrapbooks of those photos for each of her children.

Later in life, when her family would ask whether she resented working so hard to raise a family and then going to work at General Electric and Revere, she would always answer, "No, I loved every minute of it."

She and Dean were interested in family history and were active in the DeWitt County Genealogical Society. In retirement, they traveled to visit family and to research family history. She was able to visit most of the 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Caroline was an active member of former Dewitt Presbyterian Church and then joined Fullerton Presbyterian Church. She and Dean remained affiliated with Lane Christian Church. For many years, she was active in Clinton Christian Church's Young at Heart group.

Our family would like to thank J. Kent Hickerson for his prayerful times with mother during some lonely years after our father passed away. The family also would like to thank the Young at Heart group for time spent with mom during her declining years, and all of the wonderful people at Villages of Jackson Creek, who took such loving care of mom.

While our hearts are heavy at this time, we are comforted in faith and feel blessed and honored that we were gifted with the best mother in the world.
