Church honors couple
To celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Matteson, 204 Calhoun, were honored with a reception hosted by the Rev. Oliver Jones and church members in Gold Hill Lutheran Church.
The couple's children, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Matteson, 3251 S. Main, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Matteson of Rocker, and their families attended.
Violet Nelson and Roy Matteson married Sept. 28, 1927 in Devil's Lake, N.D.
They ranched near Minnewaukan, N.D., after which they moved to Butte 26 years ago.
Matteson was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and his wife was born in Perm, N.D, He worked in the Butte mines until he received an injury 12 years ago. He has been custodian at Gold Hill for about 10 years.
The Mattesons have two sons, Howard and Richard, and 12 grandchildren.

Roy Matteson, 84
Former Butte miner Roy J. Matteson of 204 Calhoun died Saturday in a local hospital. He was 84.
Services will be Monday at 2 in the Gold Hill Lutheran Church with-the Rev. James Engh officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mr. Matteson was born July 21, 1902. He attended schools in Minnesota and was married to Violet Nelson in 1927, in Devils Lake, N.D.
He was a farmer in North Dakota for several years and moved to Butte in 1951. He worked in the mines until 1965 when he was injured, and then worked as custodian at Gold Hill for many years.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Matteson and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Matteson, all of Butte; sisters, Opal Gaa of California and Emma Kester of Illinois; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. His wife died last June, and a son, Wayne, died in 1972.
Memorials are preferred to the Gold Hill Church. Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home is in charge.
