WESTFIELD BOY COMMITS SUICIDE BY HANGING SELF
Mother Finds Ralph E. Bettinger in Cellar of His Home Yesterday Morning--Was Despondent Over School
Westfield, Sept. 4--Despondent because of having to go back to school, Ralph E. Bettinger, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Bettinger of 17 Green avenue, a resident of this city for about a month, committed suicide by hanging himself in the cellar of his home some time this morning.
Mrs. Bettinger found him and telephoned for medical aid. The first intimation that the police had of anything amiss was when headquarters received a call from Mrs. Charles Hosmer of 19 Green avenue telephoned them at 11:37 this morning and said that "something terrible had happened at the Bettinger home." Police found the boy lying on the cellar floor. Dr. Robert D. Hildreth, associate medical examiner pronounced death by hanging.
The boy had taken a board, placed it between the floor joist, and then passed a clothes line over it. He apparently stood on a box after placing the rope around his neck. Attempts by the first fire department to revive the boy proved in vain. The body was taken to the Firtion-Hollister funeral home.
Bettinger was born in East Hartland, Ct., and came to this city with his parents. Besides his parents, he leaves three brothers, Harold B., of Granville and Albert and Fred with the United States army overseas; four sisters, Mrs. James Morris, of Tarrifville, Ct.; Mrs. Raymmond Sandman and Mrs. Allen Messinger of Granville and Miss Shirley Bettinger of Hartford, Ct., and his grandmother, Mrs. Ellsworth Bettinger of this city.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Furtion-Hollister funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Brookes of the Second Congregational church officiating. Burial will be in Silver Street cemetery, Granville. Friends may call tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
