Father, Joseph Kernochan, a dry goods merchant; born in Scotland and came to America in 1790; son of William and Esther Kernochan.
Mother, Margaret (Seymour) Kernochan; daughter of William Seymour. Nephew: Edward L. Kernochan, '91.
Prepared for college at the school of Aaron N. Skinner in New Haven and by private tutors, Addison VanName, '58, and Cyrus Northrop, '57. Third prize in English composition Sophomore year; dissertation appointment Junior year; first dispute appointment Senior year; member Alpha Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Skull and Bones, and Phi Beta Kappa. LL.B Columbia 1865; admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of New York County in May, 1865; then traveled abroad for a year and a half; in law office of Abraham R. Lawrence in New York City 1867-69; in partnership with his brother, Francis E. Kernochan, '61, under firm name of F. E. & J. F* Kernochan in New York 1869-1873; had since practiced independently, making a specialty of testamentary law.
President of Arminius Chemical Company 1898-1918; director of Lawyers' Title Company and of the Stephen Whitney Estate Company 1909-1929; president of New York Free Circulating Library (now absorbed by New York Public Library) 1893-1901; charter member of Association of the Bar of the City of New York 1869; warden of All Saints Memorial Church, Navesink, N. J , 18 84-1904; member of vestry of Grace Episcopal Church, New York City, since 1887 and senior warden since 1905; secretary of Class of 1863 since 1923 and also Class agent for the Alumni Fund.
Married April 15, 1869, in New York City, Mary Stuart, daughter of William and Mary Stuart (McVickar) Whitney.
