They originally came from Yorkshire in England and bore the same arms as the Yorkshire family.

      Thomas Constable lived at Loggan in the Manor of Wingfield, County Wexford, Ireland. His great-grandson wrote that he was a descendant of one of the judges of King Charles I. In the list of the Long Parliament was Sir William Constable, Baronet (regicide [Footnote: Signed the death warrant.] instead of Benson, the jobber, and in preference to Deerlove '42, Knaresborough, a "recruiter," not an original member).

      Thomas Constable and his wife ____ ____ had a son William, born 1693, who married 1716, Elizabeth Owen, of a Welsh family.

      William Constable and Elizabeth Owen, his wife, had a son John1, born in Dublin, Ireland, the first to come to America. Remarried Jane Kerin, the daughter of William Kerin and his wife Jane Ewer, of Dublin. John Constable was Lieutenant and Surgeon in the Colonial Army in 1762-5. He died at Schenectady, N. Y. , in 1785, aged 75, and was buried at St. Paul's, New York City. John Constable1 and Elizabeth Owen had a son, William2.

      Emily Constable3 was the daughter of William Constable2 born in Dublin, January 1, 1751, who was Aide to General Lafayette, an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati, a partner of Gouverneur Morris and an intimate friend of Lafayette, Hamilton, Jay, and Washington. He was the principal owner of the "Macomb purchase." He died in New York in 1803 and was buried in St. Paul's churchyard. William Constable presented a fine portrait head of Washington by Stuart to General Hamilton ; a head of William Constable [Footnote: See Ogden Hoffman's Eulogy. Hough's History of Lewis County, 1852.], by Stuart, is at Constable Hall, N. Y. Amongst the treasures of the family are letters from Gov. Morris, Lafayette, and Robert Morris. He married, February 28, 1782, Anna White, daughter of Townsend White and his wife, Anna Renaudet (m. July 13, 1741), of Philadelphia, who was one of the Queens of Beauty at the Meschianza ball, May 18, 1778. She was a schoolmate and intimate friend of Martha Dandridge, afterward Martha Custis, and later the wife of Washington. A bracelet containing a miniature of Washington is still in existence which was presented by Martha Custis. Her sister Sarah married March 17, 1767, Moore Furman, of New Jersey, who was prominent in the Revolution and a friend of Washington. See Gershom Moore4. [11]

      William Kerin Constable's father, John Constable, was a regimental surgeon in the British Army sent there in 1754. The French surrendered Montreal to the English in 1760 during the French and Indian War. John Constable's family joined him in Montreal by 1860. He resigned his commission and the family moved to Schenectady, New York.

      William Kerin Constable was a merchant and fur dealer.
      He speculated in land and debt and at one time he and his partners owned one tenth of the land in New York.

      1752-William was born on New Year day in Dublin Ireland.
      1760-Lived in Montreal with his family.
      1762-William at age 11 is in Schenectady, New York.
      His father was comminssioned as a surgeon in the First New York Regiment.
      1768-William's sister, Eweretta married James Phyn. James was associated with Sir William Johnson in the Indian trade.
      Later at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the Phyn family would leave for England on a pass issued form the new York State Committe of Public Safety.
      1769-William has an apprenticeship with the trading firm, Phyn & Ellice, at Schenectady and Detroit.
      ? [Year] Educated in Dublin, Ireland, graduated form Trinity College where he lived with his aunt, Mrs. White. When William returned he bacame a partner with his brother-in-law James Phyn.
      1774-William went to London for Phyn and Ellice.
      1777-Returned to New York and then settled in Philadelphia.
      He was involved with Benedict Arnold during Arnold's time as military governor of Philadelphia in Arnold's commercial dealing in Philadelphia.
      William lived in Philadelphia and had a partnership iwth James Seagrove in trade with France and Havana.
      1781-Aid de Camp to Generals Muhlenberg and Lafayette after taking the Oath of Allegiance to Pennsylvania.
      1782-Married Ann daughter of Townsend White of Philadelphia. Christ Church records. She was a childhood friend of Martha Washington. Seven children.
      1783-William became severely ill with Yellow Fever on a trip to Havana.
      1784-Moved to New York
      1784-Founded Constable, Rucke, and Company.
      Partnership Constable and Company, with Robert Morris and Governeur Morris; Ship: Empress of China Feb. 1784; There was a combined endeavor to establish trade between America and China. Also owned the 600 ton America.
      Partnership with Governeur Morris and silent partner, his brother-in-law, William Edgar. They were the first Americans to trade on a large scale with China. They also won a contract to supply British troops in the West Indies.
      1780s (late) and early 1790s William had business and personal relations with Alexander Hamilton.
      1791-With the merchant partners of Alexander Macomb and Daniel McCormick, they joined in the Macomb Purchase of 3.6 million acres of the wild land of New York.
      Deeds were drawn up by Alexander Hamilton.
      1791-William traveled to Europe to begin sales of the land.
      1791-William's brother, James (who went to England with the Phyns in 1777), returned from England and became a partner in the new "William Constable and James Co." William dissolved William C. and Co.
      In 1800 (10 years later), a large note had been backed of Nathanial J. Ingram which caused William Constable to fail. He was briefly in debtor's prison. The debts were settled. The land remained. James never married and died at age 43.
      1803-William Constable died.

      In 1795 William returned from England to New York. His wife, Ann, was expectiong so she stayed behind. Emily Constable was born on the 4th of July 1795. Ann was staying with her uncle, Dr. Peter Renaudet who lived in Hot Wells (1962 book pg. 19). William sent a vessel from New York to bring his family home with his brother-in-law, John White, acting as their escort (pg. 19).

      In 1796, William went to Philadelphia to request Gilbert Stuart to paint a protrait of General Washington. At the time Stuart was painting a portrait for Mr. Bingham. William paid Stuart $500 for the full length portrait and $250 for the half-length [Moffat pg. 23]
      The half-length was given to Alexander Hamilton.
      The full length was donated to the Brooklyn Museum in 1947 and sold at auction in ?

      22 May 1803 William died in Greenwich near New York City.
