      2769. GEN. MASON D. SOUTHWORTH8 [James7, William6, William5, Nathaniel4, William3, Constant2, Edward1], b. in Bridgewater, N. Y., 20 Aug. 1799; d. in Leonia (Adrian), Mich., November, 1872; m. (1), 1825, REBECCA TIFFANY, who d. in Adrian, Mich., 1840, dau. of Calvin4 and Abigail (Walker) Tiffany,* of Mexico, N. Y. She was a school teacher; m. (2) EMELINE AUSTIN. He was educated in Union College, New York, for the Presbyterian ministry, but was chosen president of a college in Mexico, N. Y., and later in Michigan. He held various positions in the militia up to brigadier-general.

      2280. JAMES SOUTHWORTH7 [William6, William5, Nathaniel4, William3, Constant2, Edward1], b. in Florida, Montgomery Co., N. Y., 30 Jan., 1769; d. in Bridgewater, N. Y., 17 Sept., 1826; m. (1), 23 Oct., 1792, MRS. SUSANNA VAIL (VALE), who d. 30 Jan., 1796; m. (2), 6 June, 1796, MARY DENNISON, b. 25 Sept., 1768, d. 9 Nov., 1846, dau. of John6 and Mary (Post) Dennison,* of Saybrook, Ct. He was educated at Union College, N. Y., and became a Presbyterian minister. He began to preach at the age of twenty-one, in Warrensburg, N. Y., as a Baptist. He preached a few years in Burlington, N. Y. In 1800, he helped organize the first Congregational church in Rome, N. Y. He settled at Bridgewater, N. Y., 1803, being the first minister in the town. He preached there twenty-five years. He was greatly beloved and respected. He also preached in Paris and Plainfield, N. Y. He died on his farm in Bridgewater, N. Y.

      *John6 served in the War of the Revolution; Jabez5 (married Mary or Dorothy Cogswell); John4 (married Ann Mason, daughter of Capt. John Mason, who was assistant governor); Capt. John3 of Stonington, Ct. (married Phebe Say, of Saybrook, Ct.); Capt. George2, born in England in 1631, came here in 1637 with his father, William1 Dennison, his mother and two brothers, Daniel and Edward. They settled in Roxbury. Capt. George married Bridget Thomson; had two daughters; his wife died and he returned to England. He served in the Parliamentary army; was wounded at Nasby; was nursed by Ann Barrowdale, of Barrowdale, near Cork, Ireland, whom he married. He returned to America and settled at Stonington. He and his wife, Ann, are said to have been strikingly handsome.
