GEORGE LE ROY BROWN10 [Helen Cornelia (Southworth)9 Brown, Mason D.8, James7, William6, William5, Nathaniel4, William3, Constant2, Edward1], b. in Jackson, Mich., 13 April, 1849; m., 19 Aug., 1875, MARY W. Hyde, b. 2 Feb., 1854, at Marshall, Mich., dau. of Hon. Augustus Osborn Hyde7.* Provost marshal, state of Michigan, during the Civil War, 1860?65. She graduated at high school, Marshall, Mich., thoroughly trained as a musician. He was student at Albion College, Albion, Mich.; was appointed cadet at West Point, where he graduated 1872, second lieutenant, Eleventh United States Infantry. He was in the field with General Mackenzie early part of 1873; post commissary of subsistence one year, 1873?74. From 1874 he served against the Indians; was personally commended by his commanding officers, Colonel Wood and General Buell; acted as Indian agent and aided in establishing Indian training schools at Carlisle, Pa. Promoted to first lieutenant, 1882; served in varied capacities at military stations and as professor of military science and tactics at Delaware College and the University of Tennessee and as instructor of state militia. Promoted to captain, 1890; quelled an Indian outbreak, for which he was commended by his commanding officers and by the Secretary of the Interior. Served as colonel of Fourth Tennessee Volunteers during Spanish War; was military governor of Trinidad, Cuba; later stationed at Matanzas, Cuba. Promoted to lieutenant colonel, 1901; proceeded to Philippines; governor of province of Paragua, etc.; later in command of his regiment, the Fourteenth United States Infantry.

GEORGE Wilson Brown, b. in Cornwall, Ct ., 12 April, 1825; d. in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., 9 Jan., 1894, s. of Andrew and Elizabeth(Wilson) Brown.* His parents moved to Clyde, N. Y., when he was four years old, and later to Concord, Mich., then to Jackson, Mich. He studied law; was member of the state legislature, colonel of militia, superintendent of the ship canal of Sault Ste. Marie, and was first mayor of that city.

His wife, Elizabeth Wilson, was descended from Rev. John Wilson, first minister of Boston, Mass.; educated at Cambridge.
