John Virgil Gleason Dies at Hospital in Hastings, relatives in this city received word today of the death of John Virgil Gleason, 76, former York county resident and pioneer of Seward county, at Hastings hospital this morning about two o'clock. Mr. Gleason had been ill for about two months prior to his death.The deceased spent the early years of his life in Seward county where his parents took a homestead. When a young man, he came to York county where he resided for many years in the vicinity of Waco and McCool where he operated a blacksmith shop.Mr. Gleason is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Gleason of Greeley: one daughter, Mrs. Ester Zimmerman of Charlroy Penn.: four sons, Byron Gleason of Kearney, Samuel and John of York and Mark at Omaha, and one sister, Mrs. Bello of Utica.Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Utica, burial will be in Utica Cemetery.John and his second wife Mary Elizabeth are buried in unmarked graves. They had a daughter Florence born May, 7, 1893 and died June 6, 1893 place of burial unknown.The following obituary is from The Greeley (Greeley NE) Oct. 6-7 1932Death Calls John GleasonJohn V Gleason died shortly after midnight Monday at the hospital in Hastings. He had been in failing health for the last few years. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy July 18. He was removed to the hospital in early August, his condition gradually became weaker until the end. Mr. Gleason was a native of Lancaster, Wis. He was born there February 8, 1857, being 75 years old at the time of his death. The Gleason family moved to Greeley from York county about twenty years ago. For a few years the lived near Belfast, later moving to Greeley. Besides his widow, four sons survive. The sons are Byron of Kearney, Samuel D. of York, Mark of Omaha and John C of York. A sister, Mrs. Dell Miller of Utica also survives. The deceased was a member of the M. W. A. lodge and United Brethren church. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. B. D. Brooks officiating. The pallbearers were Lee Wonders, Frank Vanderveer, Mike Faherty, Tom Gannon, T. J. Howard and C. A. Terry. Accompanied by his wife and sons, the body was taken to Utica by train Wednesday afternoon for burial. Mr. Gleason leaves a large number of friends who will regret to learn of his death.
