Malissa was born September 16, 1847, near Sparta, Randolph Co., Illinois, daughter of parents born in South Carolina. She died Dec. 7, 1921, at Comstock, Barron Co., Wis., aged 74 years, 3 months and 11 days, and was buried beside her husband in the Comstock Cemetery.
On Feb. 22, 1866, Malissa married Charles Gates near Sparta, Illinois. Their children, all born in Illinois, were:

AGED WOMAN PASSES AWAY
Melissa Ann Gates died Dec. 7, 1921, at the age of seventy four years. Melissa Ann Campbell as born Sept. 16, 1847, at Sparta, Randolph Co., Ill.
She was married to Charles Gates Feb. 22, 1865, who preceded her to the Great Beyond 15 years ago. Eleven children, six girls and five boys, being born to bless this union, namely Mrs. D. M. Perry of Creswell, Ore., Mrs. C. F. Houston, Albert L. and Geo. W. and Miss Martha Gates of Comstock, Wis., John W. Gates of Balfour, N. Dak., Mrs. Wm. Palmer of The Dalles, Ore., J. Henry Gates of Fargo, N. Dak. and Ralph E. Gates of Stockton, Calif. and Mrs. R. V. Smith of Medina, N. Dak., all of whom are left to mourn her death. Also one sister, Mrs. Hannah Gibson of Marissa, Ill., and 26 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Gates were both Christian people, uniting with the Baptist church about the year 1875. They resided at Marisa, Ill. after their marriage until the year 1883 when they moved to Hastings, Minn., residing there until the year 1885 when they moved to Comstock, Wis., where they resided until deaths.
Funereal services were held at the home Friday, Rev. Theo. Matthews officiated. Interment was made in the Comstock Cemetery. [Thursday, December 15, 1921, Cumberland Advocate, Cumberland, Wisconsin.]
