      Naomi Jean (Sackett) Edgar

Naomi Edgar, 91, long-time resident of West Covina, California was ushered peacefully into the presence of her Lord on July 4, 2017 in Tacoma, Washington, where she had relocated five years ago. Born September 30, 1925 in Washington, D.C., Naomi was a retired school nurse and is survived by her daughter, Susan Bauer and her husband Herb of Tacoma, son, Jim Edgar and his wife Martha of Gig Harbor, Washington, a granddaughter, Julie Edgar of Gig Harbor, grandson Peter Edgar and his wife Anna of Roanoke, Indiana, and two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Evelyn. Naomi was preceded in death in 2002 by her husband of 54 years, Robert (Bob) and brother, Bill Sackett.

Naomi spent 84 years in Southern California, first attending grammar school in Inglewood but moving to Pasadena in 1937, where she completed the rest of her schooling. She was very out-going and thus had many dear friends and spoke fondly of her family, childhood experiences and trips. She especially enjoyed church activities, like choir and youth group at First Lutheran Pasadena with her friends as well as school, including being sports editor of the newspaper and as an active participant in sports herself.

With her mother an R.N. during WWI, she developed an interest in nursing as early as the ninth grade. In the midst of WWII, Naomi was selected for the Nurse Cadet Corps, graduating as an R.N. from Stanford University School of Nursing. It was during this time, as a result of a student Bible study, weekly outreach meals with inspiring guest speakers and Christian friends, that her faith in and commitment to Jesus Christ especially grew.

While on a college break, she met her life-mate in early 1945 and after a three-year, mostly long-distance courtship, Naomi and Bob were married in 1948 in Pasadena. Their early married years were spent in San Francisco before they relocated to Southern California to be closer to her family and pursue his career in education.

During her children's early school years, Naomi conducted weekly Bible lessons in her home and was involved in church and choir at First Baptist Covina, while working summers as an R.N. at local hospitals. She relished being a full-time Mom with stints as adult leader of her children?s Scout, Brownie and church youth groups, managing to satisfy her own creative interests with enrollment in several evening courses.

Church responsibilities during this time included choir, Christian Education Committee membership and being a Deaconess. She also studied towards and ultimately earned her Public Health Degree in 1965, going-on to serve schools as the district nurse in Charter Oak for 25 years thereafter. She received various honors during her career from the Covina Women's Club, PTA and was so beloved by students and colleagues that she was issued a special personal citation from L.A. County Supervisor, Mike Antonovich upon retirement in 1991. After that, she did periodic "fill-in" medical testing for various local school districts, which she enjoyed immensely.

She remained active at church in a variety of capacities as well as being faithful to Bible Study Fellowship and leading a women?s mission support group. In later years, she and Bob also took responsibility for weekly rest home worship services, with periodic overseas pleasure trips, visiting more than two-dozen foreign countries. Of course, besides serving her Lord, she derived great satisfaction from her friends and family, especially the "little ones."

Naomi Edgar was indeed blessed to live a very full life to God's Glory!

The family welcomes friends to a memorial service planned for noon on Wednesday, July 19th at Forest Lawn-Covina Hills ("Church of our Heritage" chapel, 21300 Via Verde Drive) with reception following thereafter at Christ First Baptist Church, Covina (200 North Second Avenue).
