LIFE ENDS FOR M. D. HOPKINS
Seldom does the death of any citizen bring a sense of sorrow to as many people, as did the death of M. D. Hopkins, which occurred yesterday noon. He had won the respect and admiration of all who knew him and for whom it is hard to believe that the kind hearted old pioneer has passed out of life. His integrity and devotion to assigned tasks won the regard of all. His was a full life, a noble life, and bis death a bereavement to the community. He was everybody's friend and always had a cheery and happy word for those whom he met. He will long be missed and mourned. All who knew Mr. Hopkins in life were his friends. He had a wonderful genial disposition and a kind heart.
The days of his illness were few. Life ended for him with a smile on his lips as he went into the shadow. The end came at midday yesterday at the home of his son, Willett Hopkins, on Bassett street Few were aware that Mr. Hopkins was seriously ill and his death was unexpected. Death came with the weight of years and not from any physical ailment. He was ill only a week and did not suffer any pain. Those who had gathered at his bedside, could hardly realize that the great change had taken place.
With the passing of M. D. Hopkins, another of the early residents, whose life was linked with the pioneer days of the city, has gone.
Mortimer D. Hopkins was born in Homer, Michigan, May 13, 1839. His ancestry in the United States, dates back to 1640. His ancestor came here to seek a haven for worship in the quaker (sic) faith. Mr. Hopkins came west in 1861, crossing the plains. After his arrival he came direct to this city. Soon after coming here he removed to Two Rock, and later went to Marin county where he engaged in farming and dairying.
In the year 1869 he wedded Miss Alice Goodrich, of Napa, who was also a member of one of the pioneer families of the state. She came here in 1854 [TCS: actually Sept. 1853]. After the wedding the couple went east where Mr. Hopkins visited his old home. After their return from the east they operated a dairy in San Mateo county, remaining there five years. They gave up the business and came to this city where they permanently settled.
Mr. Hopkins engaged in the livery and stock business. At one time he was associated with J. S. Blackburn in stock dealing. He was a fine judge of cattle and a great admirer of thoroughbred stock. He served as city assessor, and made a fine record while in office. Mr. Hopkins was for twenty years assessor of Petaluma. He always attended the meetings of the State Assessors and was known widely throughout the state. It wag through his efforts that the California State Legislature passed a law exempting $100 worth of personal property from taxation. He was happy at having been able to bring this law into effect and would always enjoy the commendation of his friends who spoke of his achievement.
He was an Odd Fellow, and in honor of his memory, the flag over the Odd Fellows building is at half mast The deceased was the last surviving member of the Pescadero Lodge of Odd Fellows. He transfer red from Petaluma Lodge to Pescadero lodge after removing to San Mateo in order to help the new lodge get established. He always attended the Petaluma lodge meetings and took great interest in the work. He recently received from Petaluma lodge, No. 30, I. O. O. F. a fifty year diamond jewel. The jewel was greatly prized by the pioneer. The tribute paid him by Petaluma Lodge was a high honor as he did not actually belong. He first joined Petaluma lodge in 1868 and transferred to the Pescadero lodge after leaving here.
Mr. Hopkins was a member of Petaluma Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, and had filled the different offices of the grange. He always attended the sessions of the state granges and on the occasion of the last meeting he was ill and it was with regret that he could not attend. His presence at the meetings was always enjoyed.
Mr. Hopkins reared a large family who were a credit to him. His wife died here in 1896. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Gertrude White, Denver; Willitt and Hiram Hopkins, of this city; and Mrs. Lottie Cullen, of San Francisco. He also leaves the following grandchildren: Lodia and Frances White, LeRoy, Alice and Nadine Cullen and Alice Hopkins. He was a brother of the late H. C. Hopkins and uncle of O. C. Hopkins of this city and Mrs. Louise Hopkins Carter of Oakland.
Mr. Hopkins was a member of Silver Spray Rebekah lodge and regularly attended the meetings. When death claimed him he was in his 80th year, but was young in spirit.
Mr. Hopkins had many warm and devoted friends, who add their sincere tribute of sympathy with the relatives who mourn his death.
The funeral arrangements are in charge of John C. Mount of the Blackburn parlors.
