John W. Spearance, 88, of Sandy Creek passed away June 13, 2012 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. Born July 31, 1923 in Potsdam, N.Y. son of the late William John & Mable Minnie Sackett Spearance. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1947. Married to the former Leola "Lee" Bettinger on September 20, 1947. His wife died in 1993. He retired in 1986 as a construction worker with the Central New York Laborers Union in East Syracuse. Then he worked for the Village of Sandy Creek & the Sandy Creek/Lacona Waterworks Dept. until the age of 83. He lived at Renshaw Bay, Mannsville, N.Y. from 1956-1975. Moved to Sandy Creek in 1975. John was a member & past commander of Cable Trail V.F.W. Post #8534 in Lacona.
Surviving are 3 sons: Richard C. & Jacoba of Orwell, William J. & Sharon of Adams Center, & Thomas G. & companion Bob McElligott of Rochester. 2 daughters: Vickie L. & Charles Fenn of Sandy Creek, Edie M. Waugh & companion Shawn White of Sandy Creek. 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 3 sisters: Genevive Killenbeck of Pierrepont Manor, Dorthy Nirst of New Hampshire, Mable Ryan of LaFargeville, 1 brother: Donald of Altmar. Besides his wife Lee he was predeceased by an infant daughter Linda in 1951, 4 brothers & 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 1 P.M. Summerville Home in Sandy Creek. Rev. Wayne Grow offciating. Burial in Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours Saturday 11-1 P.M. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Cable Trail V.F.W. Pot #8534 in Lacona or Sandy Creek Fire Dept. Rescue.

WIDOW OF W. J. SPEARANCE DIES
Mannsville, Dec. 10.--Mrs. Mabel Minnie Sackett Spearance, 58, widow of William J. Spearance, died at 1:35 a.m. yesterday at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she was admitted at 4:10 p.m. Saturday. She had been in fair health until about a week ago when she developed pneumonia which caused her death.
She had made her home with her son, John, Mannsville, R.D. 2, Route 3, near Renshaw Bay.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at the Piddock funeral home, Adams, with Rev. Frank E. Morey, pastor of the Manssville Methodist church, officiating.
The body will be placed in the vault for burial in the spring in Maplewood cemetery here. Friends may call tomorrow from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Survivors include eleven children: Five daughters, Mrs. Clark (Cora) Brown, Watertown R.D. 2; Mrs. Albert (Eleanor) Lawrence and Mrs. Lloyd (Genevieve) Killenback, Adams Center R.D. 1; Mrs. Andrew (Dorothy) Hirst, Watertown R.D. 1; Mrs. Bernard (Mable) Ryan, 624 Academy street, Watertown; six sons: John, Mannsville RD. 2; Glen Gardiner, N.J.; Lawrence, Adams Center R.D. 1; Donald, Mack avenue, Pulaski; Edward, Adams Center, and Harvey, Adams Center, now serving in Korea; a brother, Porter Sackett, Watertown, and 22 grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Michael (Frances) Virkler, of Lowville, died Nov. 2.
Mrs. Spearance was born March 2, 1898, at Altmar, daughter of Gideon and Minnie Sackett. She worked as a cook in various hotels before and after her marriage. She was married to William J. Spearance in June, 1921, in Ogdensburg. They lived in Ogdensburg and then the Potsdam area a few years while they operated farms. The moved to the town of Rodman in 1929, Mr Spearance died May 23, 1948.

Funeral Today for Lawrence E. Spearance
ADAMS CENTER--The funeral for Lawrence E. Spearance, 60, South Harbor Road, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams. Spring burial will be in Union Cemetery.
Mr. Spearance died Thursday morning at his home.
Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Jefferson County, P.O. Box 677, Watertown, 13601.
Surviving are his wife, Alice; two sons, Lawrence A., Newport, R.I., and Patrick G. Brown, Carthage; a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Elaine) Aldrous, Raquette Lake; four grandchildren; five brothers, Harvey, Hemmingford, Neb., John and Phillip "Edward," both of Sandy Creek, Donald, Altmar, and Earl, Adams Center; five sisters, Mrs. Mabel Finley, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Eleanor Lawrence, LaFargeville, Mrs. Clark (Cora) Brown, Texas, Mrs. Lloyd (Genevieve) Killenbeck, Pierrepont Manor, and Mrs. Andrew (Dorothy) Hirst, Exeter, N.H., and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Lisbon on May 17, 1926, a son of William and Mabel Sackett Spearance, he was educated in local schools and served with the Navy in World War II.
He married Alice Greene on July 24, 1950, at Green Settlement.
The couple spent most of their life at Adams Center, where Mr. Spearance worked for the New York central Railroad and United Milk and Queens Farms for several years. For the past 20 years, he had been employed at Robbins Farms Supply in Adams center and Adams.
He was a member of the Adams Center Volunteer Fire Department.

Cora E. Brown, 66, Kerrville, Texas, foormerly of Belleville, died at 11:15 p.m. Jan. 17 in Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, Kerrville.
Arrangements were made with the Kerrville Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Surviving are her husband, Clark W.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Dawn) Blackwell, Shelbyville, Ill., Mrs. Lloyd (Cherie) Potter, Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla., and Genevieve Brown, Sanford, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Genevieve Killenbeck, Pierrepont Manor, Dorothy Hirst, Exeter, N.H., and Eleanor and Mabel, addresses unknown, and five brothers, John Spearance, Sandy Creek, Donald Spearance, Altmar, Edward Spearance, Pulaski, Harvey Spearance, South Dakota, and Earl Spearance, New Jersey.
A brother, Lawrence Spearance, died before her.
Born in Ogdensburg, a daughter of William John and Mabel Sackett Spearance, she married Clark W. Brown in July 1939.
Mrs. Brown worked at the Mannsville Nursing Home for a time.

Elinor J. Bush
ADAMS CENTER--Elinor J. Bush, 80, of 16972 Michaels Road, died Tuesday afternoon at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
Mrs. Bush worked at Northland Electric and Bomax, both in Watertown, for several years before retiring.
Born Dec. 31, 1927, in the town of Lisbon, she was a daughter of William and Mabel Sackett Spearance. She married Albert C. Lawrence in March 1946 at Adams Center. The couple lived at Green Settlement. Mr. Lawrence died Sept. 8, 1991.
She married Robert C. Bush on Sept. 11, 1996, in Watertown. The couple lived in the LaFargeville area. Mr. Bush died Oct. 20, 1996.
Mrs. Bush moved to the home of her daughter Jane M. Nemeir in October 2006.
Surviving besides the daughter are two sons and a daughter-in-law, David M. and Bonnie Lawrence, Adams Center, and Robert J. Lawrence, Watertown; two other daughters, Elizabeth M. Markanich, Antwerp, and Mabel A. Woodard, Theresa; three brothers, John Spearance, Sandy Creek, Earl Spearance, Toms River, N.J., and Donald Spearance, Altmar; three sisters, Genevieve Killenbeck, Pierrepont Manor, Dorothy Herse, New Hampshire, and Mabel Ryan, LaFargeville; 15 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Two sons died before her, Timothy J. Lawrence on March 13, 1995, and Richard in 1948. A daughter, Cynthia A. Fish, Eveleigh, died July 8, 2004. Three brothers, Lawrence, P. Edward, and Harvey Lawrence, and a sister, Cora E. Brown, also died before her.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Union Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.

LEOLA SPEARANCE DIES IN SYRACUSE

Leola "Lee" Spearance, 63, of 8106 Salisbury St., school cafeteria employee, died Friday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, after a short illness.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, with the Rev. Janet Gibbs, pastor of Sandy Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Ellisburg.
Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 7385 Park St., Pulaski. Contributions may be made to the Sandy Creek United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John W.; three sons, Richard C., Hephzibah, Ga., William J., Sandy Creek, and Thomas G., Rochester; two daughters, Vickie L. Fenn, Sandy Creek, and Edie Waugh, Lacona; 10 grandchildren, and a sister, Donna Ames, Topsfield, Mass.
A daughter, Linda, died in 1951, and a sister, Leona M. "Toni" Kinne, died May 14, 1992.
She was born March 31, 1929, in Mannsville, a daughter of John and Ethel Tanner Bettinger. She attended Newark Valley District schools.
She married John W. Spearance Sept. 20, 1947. The couple resided at Renshaw Bay for 19 years before moving to Sandy Creek in 1975.
Mrs. Spearance had been employed in the cafeteria of Sandy Creek Central School for the past two years. She formerly worked at McCarthy's Restaurant, Sandy Creek, for 19 years, and at Seeley's Restaurant and the Log Cabin Restaurant, both of Pulaski.
She was a member of the Sandy Creek United Methodist Church and a member and past officer of Veterans of Foreign Wars Cable Trail Post 8534 Auxiliary.
