Stanley Or Stan Sackett, 84
Sackett, Stanley M.
Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) ? Thursday, May 17, 2012
Sackett, Stanley M. 84 July 28, 1927 April 22, 2012 Stanley McKennon Sackett, 84 of Portland, died peacefully in his sleep on April 22, 2012 following a long illness. Born in 1927, he always referred to his birth year as "the year of Lucky Lindy," but it was also the year Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs - both good omens for a long and productive life. Stan (aka Dad and Papa to his kids and grandkids) was raised in Sheridan. At Oregon State University he met the love of his life, Lurah Louise Slocum. After they both graduated, and just after his 21st birthday, they married on Aug. 22, 1948. Amid a variety of jobs and five children in six years starting in 1952, he earned an M.S. in business from the University of Oregon. The family moved to Seattle where he taught and studied economics in the PhD program at the University of Washington. Dad moved on with an "ABD" (all but dissertation) in 1962, choosing a business career instead of academic life. He worked as an economist for 25 years in Portland at First National Bank of Oregon, which became First Interstate Bank by his retirement in 1989. Stan's loving wife, our Mom and Grandma Lurah, preceded him in death in 1988. He's survived by daughter, Jane Mackinnon (Patrick Riordan); sons, Jeff (Lori), Jonathan (Ginni), Timothy (Leslie), all of Portland, and Daniel (Pamela) of Seattle; brother, Russ (Carolyn) of Ellensburg, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. We all love him very much and are happy that he and Mom are together again. Stan was an avid reader, humanitarian, conversationalist, and thinker; an inventive, generous, open minded, curious, philosophical, good humored and humorous person, a loyal friend, and a tremendous dad and grandfather. As a lifetime member of Eastrose Unitarian Fellowship, he is remembered with great love, respect, and admiration. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Eastrose Unitarian Fellowship, 1133 NE 181st Avenue, Gresham, Ore. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Eastrose Fellowship or SnowCap Community Charities.
