The Cyrus Sackett House at Bellbrook, 1933

From the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, 9 Sep 1933, page 3

This photo accompanies an article titled "Roaming the Rural Routes." That article describes several locations, and includes the following text:

Along the old post road that ran from Cincinnati to Springfield and, in a glamorous day, made the main street of Bellhrook, The Roamer found just outside of the village in Sugar Creek tp. some farm houses that were new when the 19th century was young. Oct 17, 1799, Cyrus Sackett arrived at a point in the woods along this post road, then an Indian trail. He had brought his family all the way from Kentucky in an ox-drawn wagon and, worn out from the long journey, they made tents of their bed clothing and spent their first night on Green co. soil. He had bargained for 150 acres of this virgin forest at $2 the acre, and had a parchment deed signed by President Adams for this home in the wilderness. Strange to say, this tract of land remained in the Sackett family 100 years.

Cyrus Sackett first built a cabin of round logs, later a hewed log house that was superior to any in the neighborhood. As he prospered he tore down this house of logs and built perhaps the first frame house to be erected in this section. One's mind is busy with the past as one stands in the 'front room' of this age old home, which has housed generations of Sacketts, and notes the wide old fireplace, the plain mantle and on each end curious little cupboards in which at one time were kept the ancient parchment deed, along with the almanac, the psalter and the old dagurreotypes. The Smileys, of Dayton, are the present owners of the historic place, and plan to restore it to its old-time charm.

Note: As indicated in the general notes for Cyrus, "Bell Brook Moon" says that Cyrus and his wife "spent the remainder of their lives" in "a large hewed-log house" (his second house built at Bellbrook). So, the frame structure may actually have been built by one of his descendants.
