ILL Week, A. S. RUGGE IS DEAD

Former City Clerk Was Well Known and Respected, in This, His Native City--Was 65 Years Old

Death claimed one of Glens Falls' most prominent citizens at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon when Augustus Sherman Rugge breathed his last following a week's illness, in his home, 254 Glen street.. News of his death was a shock to his many friends throughout the city who were not aware that his illness was of a serious nature.

Mr. Rugge was a life long resident of Glens Falls, having been born here January 80, 1$51, the son of George and Martha Mahala Rugge. He received his education in the Glens Falls Academy, training particularly in book keeping. His first business engagement was with what has since developed Into the First National Bank with which he remained several years. Leaving the bank, he purchased the shirt manufacturing business of Libby & Spier in Park street. He conducted the factory until it was destroyed by fire in 1894.

A short time after the fire, Mr. Rugge opened another factory in Glen street near what is now the site of The Post-Star building. This enterprise was shortlived as fire again interfered with Mr. Rugge's business activities and the plant was burned to the ground. His next, business venture was in the Glens Falls Steam Laundry, which is in operation and managed by his son, Sherman A. Rugge

Alwavs an ardent worker in the Republican party, Mr. Rugge's efforts were rewarded in 1908 when Mayor Cool appointed him city clerk to succeed Herbert Potter, who resigned. Mr Rugge, who served two terms in the office, having received a reappointment from Samuel D. Kendrick, retired from the city clerk's office in 1912 and affiliated with the Little & Loomis Insurance company in a capacity in which he was retained until his death.

As a member of one of the oldest and most promient (sic) families of Warren county, Mr. Rugge had natural prestige when starting out on his business career, and his splendid ability coupled with his honesty and splendid character quickly established him among Glens Falls' most prominent business men. Throughout his life, he was regarded as a plain spoken and reliable man who could always be depended on to express true opinion of any subject regardless of the consequences.

He was a member of the Finch Hook and Ladder Volunteer Fire company and of the Glens Falls club. With the passing of the last named organization, Mr. Rugge became a member of Glens Falls lodge 81, B. P. O. E., which was the only fraternal organization with which he affiliated.

He was married October 16, 1879, to Sarah Louise Penrose who survives him with three children, Sherman A. Rugge and Mrs. Harry Theobald of Glens Falls and G. Folson Rugge of Albany. Other near survivors are seven sisters, Mrs. Annie Haviland, Mrs. A. W. Hitchcock, Mrs, J. S. Stuart, Mrs. Lemon Thompson, Mrs. Charles B. Dix, Mrs. Charles O. Howe, and Mr. John R. Loomis Jr. The funeral services will take place Saturday afternoon, Rev. Dr J. Lyon Caughey officiating.
