Phillip "Phil" Messer, 88, of Sumatra, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, in Billings.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1917, to Frank and Barbara Messer in Richardton, N.D., and moved to eastern Montana in 1919 when his parents homesteaded north of Vananda.
Mr. Messer and Irene Schleder of Sumatra were married on June 30, 1946, and they were life-long ranchers in the Sumatra area.
He enjoyed nothing more than working with cattle and horses, and was able to remain active working livestock until he was 87. He particularly enjoyed seeing and participating in the growth of the ranch over the past 15 years.
Mr. Messer was a proud Navy veteran of World War II and spent the bulk of his service in the South Pacific. He served on the Sumatra School Board and the Rosebud County Planning Board.
His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Irene; three sons, Raymond Messer and wife, Elaine, of Houston, Texas, Charles Messer and wife, Annie, of Birney, and Gene Messer and wife, Shirley, of Billings; a daughter, Frances Dellit and husband, Bob, of Sumatra; two sisters, Leona Green and husband, LeRoy, of Great Bend, Kan., and Frances Hendrix of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be said at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at the Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth.
Burial will be in the Forsyth Cemetery, Forsyth, MT., following the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Horizon Hospice Home, 1019 Neptune Blvd., Billings, MT 59105; the Melstone EMT; or a charity of one's choice.
