IRENE DALCHER - 87, of Stamford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Saturday morning, June 30. She had been a resident of Edgehill in Stamford for the past 3 years, where she enjoyed the final years of her life and found great love and friendship.

From the mid 60s until her retirement in 1978, Irene taught the third and fifth grades at East School in New Canaan and was active in the Unitarian Universalist Society, where she sang in the choir and served on the Board of Directors.

Irene was born to Loretta and Lester Sackett in Stewartville, Minnesota, and grew up on the family farm there. She graduated from Winona State College where she was the valedictorian and the homecoming queen. After graduating she taught school in Savannah, Illinois where she met her future husband. She was married to Leslie Dalcher in 1944.

In Beloit, Wisconsin, where the Dalcher family lived from 1947 to 1960, Irene was the co-founder and Director of the Schermerhorn Art Gallery. The Gallery introduced many local and several prominent national artists to the greater Beloit area, among them Gabor Peterdi, Robert Marx and Glen Bradshaw. She served in the Art League and sang in the choir of the Beloit Congregational Church, while raising a family of 3; Harold, Allan and Elaine.

Irene leaves behind her brothers, Bill Sackett and wife, Arva of Rochester, Minnesota and Les Sackett and his wife Barbara of Oceanside, California; her sister, Helen Welch of Rochester; Hal(Harold), his wife Debbie and their sons Evan and Casey; Allan, his fianc?e Kathrin and their children Aurelien, Damian, Florian, Lukas and Lena; Elaine and her partner Cathy; nieces and nephews and many many friends from Minnesota, Beloit, New Canaan and Stamford.

She is remembered by all as the heart of the family, the holder of the tune and the life of the party. She enjoyed the Opera, Symphony and Ballet; she and Les held an annual subscription to the New York City Ballet since the mid 60s, as well as The Long Warf Theatre for many years. She enjoyed watching tennis, especially women's tennis, and more recently women's basketball as a rabid UCONN Huskies fan.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society Church in Stamford on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Noon. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Irene Dalcher Memorial Fund to support guest musicians for the music program at the Unitarian Church. Checks can be made payable to "UUSIS" and designated to the Dalcher Memorial.
