      DURHAM -- Jane Ellen Draves, 83, died Feb. 13, 2010, at The Inn at Spruce Wood following a long illness, surrounded by loved ones .

      She was born in New York City, Oct. 27, 1926, to Jennie Mae (Jane) Bramblett and John Sanford Peck. She was raised in Richmond, and Scarsdale, N.Y. She attended Vassar College before marrying W. William VanderWolk Jr. They raised their five children in Hingham, Mass. and Manchester.

      She moved to Amherst in 1971 and served three years as the director of the New Hampshire School Volunteers Program. In 1973, she married David D. Draves and moved to Durham. She received her master's degree from University of New Hampshire in 1973 and served as a guidance counselor at Exeter High School until her retirement in 1992.

      Family members, in addition to her husband of 36 years, include her brother, John Sanford Peck Jr. of Malibu, Calif.; her five children, Edith V. Stevenson of Melvin Village, William C. VanderWolk of Brunswick, Maine, Martha L. VanderWolk of Canaan, Vt., Amy V. Lederman of New York City and Jefferson P. VanderWolk of Hong Kong; five stepchildren, Diane Draves of Batavia, Ill., David Draves Jr. of Marblehead, Mass., Christine York of Freeport, Maine, Sheila Corcoran of Pittsfield, Maine and Carol Dunkle of Williamsburg, Va.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

      SERVICES: Mrs. Draves donated her body to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for Parkinson's research.

      There will be a memorial service later in the year.
