Siskiyou Daily News (Yreka, CA) - Thursday, April 2, 2015
85, of Visalia, California Formerly of Etna Kenneth Myron Immer, age 85, passed away at his home on March 28, 2015, in Visalia, California, surrounded by family. He was born on Jan. 21, 1930, to Myron Charles Immer and Elsie Agnes Cooper in Placerville, California.

Known to his family and friends as Ken, he spent his formable years in Truckee, where he found an interest in skiing and ski jumping. Not only was ski jumping an interest of Ken's, but it also garnered him many athletic achievements, including a California/Nevada State Championship in 1946.

He continued ski jumping while attending Sierra College as well, which yielded even more accolades.

Ken's career in the Navy was also very important to him. From 1947-1957, Ken spent time on submarines off the coast of California.

During the latter part of his naval career, he aided in the development and the use of missiles on submarines.

Which led him to a job working at Aero Jet General on the Gemini Program in the liquid oxygen division. It was there that Ken had the opportunity to meet Gus Grissom and Gordon Cooper, two of the first astronauts.

After his retirement from the Navy, Ken attended Sacramento State University, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1966 and a master of arts in education in 1973.

Upon graduation, Ken started his career as an educator, both as a teacher and as an administrator.

He began teaching at his alma mater, Placer High School in Auburn, California, in 1968. Re-founding the Placer Ski Team at Placer High School gave him the opportunity to step outside the classroom and touch the lives of student athletes. Ken taught typing, accounting, economics and other business courses at both Placer High School and at Colfax High School for five years before he became a school administrator. First, becoming the vice principle of Del Oro High School in Loomis, California, in 1971. Then, working at Etna High School in Etna as the principle and superintendent.

Finally, working as an administrator of the Regional Occupational Program for the Placer County Office of Education and as the director of the Regional Occupational Program at the Tehama County Office of Education, the latter of which is where Ken ended his 21-year career as an educator in 1989.

In retirement, Ken enjoyed traveling with his wife of 62 years, Rhoda, playing golf with his friends at Castle Oaks Golf Course in Ione, California, and attending Dixie Land Jazz Music Festivals.

Ken was preceded in death by both of his parents as well as his brother, Virgil Immer.

He is survived by his wife, Rhoda Immer; his eldest son and family: Steven, Nancy and Gus Immer; his second son and family: Heath, Maureen, Chelsea and Tyler Immer; and his daughter and family: Martin, Heather, Bradley and Holly Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Kaweah Delta Hospice Care or to the National Cancer Society.

A private memorial service will be held for family and friends in Visalia, California, and a service will be held in Ione, California, at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the nurses at Kaweah Delta Hospice Care - Dr. Chawki Gerges and oncologist Dr. Michael Moffet.
