      Dr. Ralph D. Harby, who was a member of the first faculty and helped form the first dental department at Columbia University, died in the Florida Lutheran Retirement Center, DeLand, Florida. A Walton native, who spent his early years and then part of his retirement years here, Dr. Harby had also been in charge of the Dental College of Cornell Medical School and the New York Hospital Dental Department. He was also the first dental professor of prosthetic dentistry at Columbia University.

      The son of Robert Harby and Emily Chace Harby, he was born in Walton. He was a graduate from Princeton University in 1904 and from the University Of Buffalo College Of Dentistry in 1907.

      He had spent summers in Walton during the past eight years before his death and had lived in Florida during the winter months. Dr. Harby was past secretary of the Second District Dental Society, a life member of the National Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association and his county association. For many years he had a private dental practice in New York City during which time he resided in Scarsdale.

      An elder of Scarsdale Presbyterian Church 11 years, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of DeLand when he died. He was a life member of Walton Lodge 559 F&AM and a few years ago was presented his 60-year pin. He also had membership in Aurora Consistory, Brooklyn and Kismet Shrine, New Hyde Park.
