Elezer Curtiss Sackett
This man was the 9th child and 5th son, and was a boy of nine summers when he came into Tallmadge, and he lived at home and attended school and also the Tallmadge Academy, under the Tuition of Elizur Wright Esq., and by this means he secured an education. He remained at home untill he was 21; his Father gave him ___ acres off the west side of Lot No. __ in Tract 15. He cleared some of it of timber. About 1826 he went to Conn, and there worked at farming. He married Miss Patty, daughter of Mr Homer Sackett, had a contract in the Penn Canal near Pittsburgh. When their Canal Section was finished he returned to Ohio and bought out his younger brother Salmon. He united with the Cong'l Church Feb 16th 1817. Dis April 8th 1845.

interest in their Father's, home farm. He carried on the home farm, and in connection with his brothers Norman, and Cassander, they worked a farm on the openings in the Township of Portage. A project was started in 1843 to take the Cuyahoga River, at the dam occupied at the present time, (1877) by Mr. John Hinde, around onto the Sand Hills, north of Akron. "This Company was Called the Portage Canal and Manufacturing Company, having the derisive name of the Chuckery Company."
they succeeded in getting the water through, planned for a city of great magnitude called, "Summit City." This was designed on paper to have been one of the largest, manufacturing cities of the world. But this is not the only paper city, that has failed,, and its projectors come to grief. Mr. Sackett, was one that was identified with it, and when the company failed, Mr. Sackett sold the farm to Amos Avery, taking Mr. Avery's place at the Center of Tallmadge, in part payment and E. C. Sackett, had Mr. Avery deed the place to his Father. Mr Sackett, built a large house in Akron at the foot of the hill, near what is known as Howard Street Extension (1877.) Here he lived hoping to gather something from the wrecks of the great undertaking known as the Chuckery Ditch.
After many law suits, and years of litigation, the courts decided the questions at issue and the affairs of the Company were closed up. Mr. Sackett, after the death of his father, went to Illinois with his family settling at Bardstown,

Mr. E.C. Sacket, of Beardstown, Illinois, has made a novel contribution to the Soldier's Aid Society of that village. He has handed over all the fruit of his apple orchard, five acres in extent, to the ladies of the society, who have already commenced gathering, paring and drying the fruit. Nothing is more welcome to the men in the field than dried fruit, and persons who have orchards would do well to imitate the example of this Illinois patriot.

. . . Helping slaves escape became more dangerous after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which stipulated fines of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail for assisting fugitives.

Desperate men pursuing fugitive slaves were known to take desperate measures against station masters and conductors, sometimes resorting to violence.

In 1854, James Worthington, a black barber living in Akron since the early 1840s, was apprehended by bounty hunters posing as marshals.

They were met at the train by a crowd assembled by Eleazer Sackett, an old-time abolitionist. With the crowd swelling behind them, lawyers Upson and Christopher Wolcott demanded to see the papers authorizing the bounty hunters to seize Worthington, deemed them illegal and persuaded them to release Worthington and leave town on the next train . . . .

Akronites Motivated By Heart, Not Pocketbook

When [John] Brown was executed by the State of Virginia Dec. 2. 1839, for the raid on the Harper's Ferry arsenal, flags were displayed at half staff in Akron [Ohio] and other Summit County towns; stores and business places closed and bells were tolled. A meeting was held in the hall of the Empire House that night and the leading men of the town made speeches.

Even before the Brown tragedy, the temper of the people in regard to slavery had been tested by the famous, or infamous, case of "Barber Jim Worthington."

Worthington was a tall, athletic Negro who came to Akron in the early '40s and set himself up as a barber. He was betrayed in 1834, apparently by his own wife whom he had married here. "Jim" was a good barber. In time, he was able to fit up his shop, as a contemporary wrote, "with fine mahogany and plush upholstered chairs, large and attractive mirrors... with a stnped pole in front about a foot in diameter and 25 or 30 feet in height..."

And then Jim married "a very handsome and bright light-colored mulatto girl by the name of Maggie Bird."

Shortly after the marriage, Maggie's brother, William Bird, opened a rival "tonsorial establishment almost as splendidly appointed as Worthington's.

There was bitterness then between Maggie's husband and her brother. And Jim was jealous of his pretty wife. Whatever the reason, the Worthingtons separated. Not long after, came the attempt by agents of a slaveholder to seize Worthington and return him to his "owner."

First, a stranger appeared in Jim's shop and looked him over. A few days later, May 17, 1854, the marshal of Akron, Capt. J. J. Wright, was notified to meet at the Union depot the next morning "the sheriff from Chicago."

Marshal Wright was there at the meeting place ahead of time. He met the "sheriff" and another man who introduced himself as "the U. S. marshal from Newark." They said they wanted Worthington as a counterfeiter and wanted to make the arrest quietly so as not to "disturb the rest of the gang" in the vicinity.

JIM was arrested and brought to the station, protesting his innocence. And that was the situation when there arrived on the scene a crusty oldtime Abolitionist named Eleazer C. Sackett.

Sackett smelled a rat, to be precise "the sheriff." Since Chicago is a city, it doesn't have and didn't then sheriff. The old man spread the alarm and a mob quickly gathered at the station. In the crowd was Christopher P. Wolcott. Later, Wolcott was attorney general of Ohio and, then, the assistant to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, his brother-in-law.

Wolcott and others unmask ed the sheriff and "U.S. Marshal" actually, they were both officers from Louisville, Ky. The latter threatened to shoot but the crowd defied them and they hastily boarded the train without Jim.

Jim's owner had been waiting in Cleveland. When he heard what had happened, he remarked "I guess the Fugitive Slave Law doesn't amount to much in Ohio, anyhow."

Death of Father Sackett.

At 6:30 o'clock this morning Mr. E. E. (sic) Sackett, better known as Father Sackett, died at the residence of his son-in-law, W. B. Garlick, at Sixth and Everett avenue. Mr. Sackett was in his 88th year. The immediate cause of his death was an attack of malarial fever, with which he had been suffering for about a week. Mr. Sackett had been a resident of this city for about eight years, during which time he has lived with his son-in-law, Mr. Garlick. He was born in Connecticut and moved to Ohio in a very early day. He was one of the early abolitionists, and took an active part in the stirring incidents of the ante bellum period.

He leaves four daughters and one son to mourn his death. Mrs. E. S. Garlick and Miss Flora Sackett live in this city. Two of the daughters live in Illinois and the son lives in Iowa.

Mr. Sackett was a member of the Congregational church, and led an exemplary Christian life. The funeral will take place from the residence of W. B. Garlick, 600 Everett street, at 4 o'clock p. m. to-morrow, Thursday.
