      the 5th letter that I have
      rote and got no answer
      and it is the last that
      i will rite unless I
      get one there is 20
      dollars i send you

      Camp near Vicksburg Mississippi
      My Dear parrents I take my pen
      in hand to inform you that we are
      both well excepting we have to battle
      Diarree. But we are getting about
      over it we hope these few liines
      will find you all well we would
      like to see you all very much it
      it seems lik an awful long time
      since I seen any of you. you said
      you wanted to no who our officers
      are our Major Generals name is
      Burbaridge and our Colonels name is
      thomas Moore and our Majors name
      is ?tom madrus? our Captains name
      is James Carlin, Company D
      83 Regiment Ohio volunteer infantry
      Captain Boyer has Resigned some
      time a go. you must Rite and
      let us no how you all are
      and how all my enquireing
      friends are let us no all the news

      For we cannot get any news here
      at all we are under general grants
      Command now we dont no whether
      we will Make an attact on
      Vicksburgh yet or not I tell you
      that place is Mighty well fortified
      2 of our gun Boats Run the Blockade
      at vicksburgh this Morning the
      Rebels fired a few shots at them
      But they made the Riffle
      the Mississippi River is
      Raising very fast tobacco sells
      down her at the Rates of
      2 dollars a pound But we Cannot
      get any for the wasnt of Money
      for we have not Been payed of
      yet and we dont no when we will
      Be. I have not had 1 drop of
      whiskey for more than 2 months
      they Charge 2 dollars a quart
      down here for it I wish to god
      they would pay us of so that
      we Could get some things that

      we need we have plenty of
      good Clotheing But we have
      very poor grub I have not
      eat 1 pound of grub for more
      than 1 week we have Plenty
      of water down here if we dig
      a hole 1 foot deep they is A plenty
      of water Comes up out of the
      ground o But how I would like
      to have one good mess of Mush
      and Milk and some good
      Corn Bread and potatoes
      Sos no More at present But
      My love to you all Rite soon
      if I ever get home with My
      Money I will Buy a lot of ground
      and put up a house on it for
      you and then we will have a
      little home of our own I hope
      we will get home some time

      and let us no what he
      thinks of the times
      [De Lancey Sacket never made it home. He died in the U. S. Service March 11, 1863 at Van Buren Hospital, Millikins Bend, LA of chronic diarrhrea.]
